Maths question help please...

Doing some exam prep with DD and we came across this question.

I'm usually fine with Maths, but have literally NO idea how to even start this.

Look at the first sum. The left column adds up to 6 so there must be 2 "clinks" carried over from the "tinkles" column. The right column adds to 15 with three left over so 12 " tinkles" must be the 2 "clinks" which need to be added to the left hand side, therefore 6 "tinkles" in each "clink". From this information you should be able to work out the other two sums.

So 6 clinks have a value of 8, 15 tinkles have a value if 3- so you can calculate the value of one clink and one tinkle. Use those for the rest of the page.

You need to work out what's been carried.

15 Tinkles is 3 tinkles and carrying 2 clinks

So 2 clinks is 6 tinkles, one clink is 3 tinkles

Question 1

Add up the clinks (2+2+1+1 =6) and see that the clinks total in the completed sum is 8. So that tells you that there are enough tinkles in the tinkle column to make 2 whole clinks and the tinkles total (3) is the remainder.

Add up all the tinkles, subtract 3 (the remainder tinkles total above). That number is the number of tinkles that gave you 2 whole clinks, so divide it by 2 and you have the answer to q1.

The rest should then be straightforward.

Thanks all. Still don't really "get" it! I've never seen a problem quite like it! Can anyone give me a link to similar ones please?

It's a really, really stupid question.

In 2021, very few kids who'll pass 11+ exams this year would be able to answer it.

OK, I get it, but it took me a while.
It's a 'bases' question, I guess. I'm pretty sure that's not on the KS2 curriculum.

it's a very badly worded or explained question, because it is not clear visually that it is supposed to be a column addition - the two columns are very far apart.
