What do you do when:

  • you have no EHCP
  • young person doesn't have stamina for full time
  • young person would benefit healthwise from being at college at least part time
  • college require full time due to funding

Unfortunately, to guarantee it, there's no other way than applying for an EHCP. In exceptional circumstances a minority of colleges will allow part time and take the financial hit, but they don't have to and could change their mind at any time.

It wouldn't be the course the young person is currently doing, but some colleges have courses aimed at young people who are NEET or risk of being NEET which often aren't full time.

Thanks, that's v helpful.

Next questions (probably rhetorical).

  • Why didn't anyone (school?) tell me a year ago to apply for an EHCP (or get on and proactively do it themselves?)
  • Why haven't college suggested it either given I have been in contact with them since ~Feb?

Sadly, too many schools and colleges don't tell parents. Either because they are misinformed themselves and believe the LA's incorrect, often unlawful, guidance. Or they intentionally misinform parents because they may have to provide, and fund, a greater amount of support.
