Hi, I'm looking for options for my DS who is not very academic but a great kid, very creative, sporty, and who could benefit from a school with lots of extra activities and facilities that his current school can't offer. Willing to travel within a reasonable distance out of london and pay for private. I realise 13+ is coming up but I don't want to put too much pressure on him as he wasn't very successful at the 11+ so a school where entrance isn't dependent on scores...if that exists! He's at our local state which is a nice school but I think he would benefit from smaller classes and better pastoral care. Any tips even obscure schools/towns would be much appreciated,Thanks in advance!

Box Hill School, Dorking
Duke of Kent, Dorking area
NorthWood Schools (Northcote Lodge/Broomwood School's senior in Streatham area)
Ewell Castle

Claremont Fan Court
St John's
Epsom College - although all these three are selective, but not London school level selective

St Dunstans in Catford?
St Dunstan's is selective and progressively harder to get into.

Worth a look at Fulham School.

Duke of Kent in the Surrey Hills is a lovely non selective school but it is in the middle of nowhere (relatively) so you would have to drive each day which will easily take more than 1 hour from Clapham Junction

have never known anyone be turned away from St Dunstans (even in the last 5 years) - they do have an exam but that seems more to find those with scholarship potential.

I have known at least 5 children who have not passed the 11 plus in St Dustans in the last few years and have not been invited for an interview. It is definitely selective but not as much as Alleyn's, Dulwich College, Jags.

Of the parents I know in Dulwich / South London the most popular co-ed choices are:

  1. St Dunstans
  2. Royal Russell

I can't say that the schools are completely non-selective but the ability range is more average excluding the scholarship students compared to the academic London day schools.

If moving to Dulwich is an option, the Charter North Dulwich is a great co-ed state option and there is also always the lottery for Kingsdale which doesn't have a catchment.

Good luck

Emanuel school is walking distance to Clapham Junction, coed, a friendly school with great facilities and rising up academically.

Open day should be coming up.
