Handwriting pens for left handed child

Morning,

My son starts high school in September and I've been given a stationery list to supply him with.

He is left handed and we have had massive struggles with handwriting- mostly because his hand smudges the words.

We have this pretty much sorted now- but I know for a fact that he cannot write with a biro. It just ends up a total illegible mess.

At primary he used the Berol handwriting pens that school supplied, and I'm tempted to just buy more of these- however I've seen other brands online which claim they erase etc so am a bit stuck.

Just wondered if anyone can recommend anything that they have found works- especially with left handed children.

I used fountain pens at his age and really wish that this was still a thing- although I'm not sure they would be any better!

Thanks in advance...

I'm LH and write with a fountain pen. I tilt the paper and tend to hold the pen nib above where my hand rests on the page. It takes years of practice though. Still can't unlock a door but that's a whole other problem!

My left-handed teen uses Lamy left-handed fountain pens

There is an angled pen called a yoropen
That my son used to use. Dyslexic and a lefty.

Another vote for the Lamy left-handed fountain pen (not me, but my daughter).

I’ve recently purchased Swash Komfigrip pens for my left handed child. He really likes them, not used at school yet but hoping they’ll be good as no smudging at home.

DS is a leftie and gets on best with Pelikan Twist rollerballs.

This site has boxes of pens.

Dunno about this wishbone pencil, think it’s designed to support pencil hold.

It’s a shame he can’t use the pencils if that’s what make it easier for him. I wasted loads of time making my left handed writing beautiful; I wish I’d spent the time learning interesting things instead.

We use the left handed stabio easy handwriting pens in our primary - these were recommended to us by a mum who had found one for her left handed son (who also had a few fine motor skill issues). She asked if he could use it in school and it improved his handwriting so much we got a few in for other left handers.

Who knew it was such a big deal!! As a left hander from a family of left handers and left handed DC, my advice would be chill out !!

We are all functioning adults with professional jobs and strangely enough we all write with PENS!! Just bog standard biros. And yes I did use a fountain pen at school, and yes I did have a permanent stained hand where I had leaned on the page.Grin

Seriously though, don't make it such a big deal. Kids use a keyboard so much more these days so neat handwriting isn't such a big thing. Although I am not ashamed to say that I have lovely handwriting Wink, even though me and my siblings spent our childhood being called "cackhanded" by our dear departed Grandpa Grin

I have just purchased several different pens recommended on line for left handed people. After testing a few (by trying to smudge them) we found gelocity in black were the best for my left hander. I didn’t buy the blue or red so no idea what they are like.

£3 wilkos was the cheapest I found www.wilko.com/en-uk/bic-gelocity-quick-dry-assorted-3-pack/p/0505037

I have a left handed DC in sixth form and must have tried every biro recommended for lefties that exists.

Do not buy any type of 'junior' pen for your DC in secondary unless you want him to stand out to the mean kids.

Yellow barrel fine Bics and the similar yellow barrel fine 0.3 Staedtler bog standard biros don't smudge and are great for left-handed people and don't look unusual to the school mean kids. Actually the 0.3 Staedtlers are probably finest and least likely to smudge but Bic also OK.

Can buy boxes of them on Amazon (they will lose them/lend them and not get back/have them nicked etc).

For more expensive, there are jetstream fine pens, but the yellow barrel bics and Staedlters are just as good.

You can also get good non-babyish left-handed scissors on Amazon, think the brand is Westcott 5 inch will fit inside pencil case and look normal to the other kids.

@Carycy - of course adults use fountain pens. I do, every day. My son is a leftie and he used Lamy left handed fountain pens.

sashh · 30/08/2021 17:15

I think your best bet is to go to a specialist pen shop or Left hand shop and let him try different pens.

Nobody in adulthood uses a god damn fountain pen.

I do, I have several.

Frixion pens

user654351 · 30/08/2021 18:15

I see in the OP you mention the erasable pens - yes the Frixion pens are good for left handed people and don't smudge, but most schools don't allow them (ink fades in bright sunlight, heat etc - I once ironed a sheet of my son's work that was crumped at the bottom of his bag and made all the handwriting disappear - you have to put it in the freezer then to make it come back) -> many schools don't allow them.

(still worrying that you will send your child to school with primary school Berol handwriting pens)
