DS has just got his AS results
B history C politics and D Eng Lit

His last report graded him at A A/B and C respectively

We are not suggesting it's unfair we ust don't understand how it works and what that means for university applications

Could someone explain

Most schools don't even do AS so I don't think it will impact uni offers. They are more likely to look at predicted for A level surely?

With regard to his grades, I would speak to his teachers. You need predicted for UCAS application - what do they say he needs to do you improve and what went wrong?

randomuser231 · 10/08/2021 12:01

AS is important, can he talk to his school and appeal? It makes up part of his final A Level grade. For example, if you get an E in AS and an A on your final exams, your AS will be incorporated to make the final grade given. Obviously that is the grade that gets you into uni so is important. Did he get a UMS mark?

Unis will look at AS but it is a predicted grade from this year so it will form part of the picture alongside GCSES and Y13 predictions

What happens with the vast majority then that don't do AS? Is it simply on predicted and GCSEs? Apologies if I gave duff info OP.

OP are you in Wales? Most English schools don't bother with AS now...

randomuser231 · 10/08/2021 14:10

@clary Yes. Those who don't do AS (mainly just international and Wales who do AS now) aren't at a disadvantage. However, the Unis want to see the students individual profile. If they've sat AS Levels, of course it will be of interest to the uni and should be declared. Those who don't sit AS Levels have end of year 12 grades that form a predicted grade anyway.

randomuser231 · 10/08/2021 14:11

Should add it can be uni dependent. I know Cambridge really care about AS grades if sat, for example. Especially the UMS breakdown.

catndogslife · 10/08/2021 16:21

If you are in England the results don't count towards the end of Y13 grade, but must be declared on the UCAS form.
My understanding is that there are no grade boundaries / UMS scores for teacher assessed grades. But your teachers may be able to tell your ds whether he was low/middle of high within each grade.

superram · 10/08/2021 17:00

Usually/possibly an uplift of one grade.

Queenofthesilverdollar · 10/08/2021 23:20

Thanks all

What is UMS mark (united marking system?)

If there are no grade boundaries I’m even more confused re how he has gone from A A/B C and excellent for effort to B C D

Am really concerned

Jus to add that if you are in Wales, this year's AS grades don't have to count towards A levels, it's up to the student to decide whether they want them to count or not.

GrammarTeacher · 11/08/2021 05:39

There are no grade boundaries this year as there were no official exams and everyone did different things. The school should have informed students how they were awarding grades in advance. There is an appeals system but it is very limited this year. To resolve this you will need to speak to you school's exams officer.
My school has sent an email out to all students on what to do next if they are not happy with results so checking email may also help.

GrammarTeacher · 11/08/2021 05:40

Don't worry about UMS this year. There is no UMS this year. It's the adjusted grades after norm referencing has occurred that shows how close to grade boundaries they were. It can only exist when nationwide exams run.
