On the part about this child not being representative of the student body in this particular election and as it being confusing to girls at the school, I think she has a point.

Teacher sacked after attempting to scupper transgender candidate’s hopes of being head girl.

Susan Field told tutor group she felt pupil was not ‘representative’ of the student body and that role was not ‘appropriate’ for her

A teacher has been sacked after attempting to scupper the election hopes of a transgender candidate who wanted to be head girl.

Susan Field told her tutor group she felt the pupil was not "representative" of the student body and that it was not an "appropriate" role for her, the teaching watchdog found.

Ms Field, a French teacher who was said to have previously enjoyed an "unblemished 35-year career", was dismissed from Ash Manor School, in Surrey, for gross misconduct after a disciplinary hearing into her remarks and subsequently lost her appeal.

The student, referred to by the Teaching Regulation Agency as "Pupil I", had publicly identified as a female student to the school since the start of the academic year.

Staff were briefed that she wished to identify as a girl, would have a girl's name and that female pronouns should be used when referring to her.

She was running for election on the school's student senior leadership team, but Ms Field admitted she had attempted to scupper this.

Ms Field told 21 children in her Year 11 tutor group that "the reason why she was going to rank Pupil I last was because she considered that Pupil I was not representative of the student body".

The teacher went on to admit that she had intended to use her teacher vote to rank the pupil in bottom place as she thought she was the "least representative student" to be made head girl.

The panel found proven allegations that she was guilty of making "inappropriate and transphobic" remarks while discussing Pupil I's candidacy.

She admitted saying Year 7 should not be introduced to "that kind of thing" in reference to the possibility of Pupil I being elected as a role model to represent the school.

The disciplinary hearing in Coventry was told that, during the 10 to 15-minute conversation in May 2019, various pupils described Pupil I as "disgusting". Other "hostile and derogatory language" was also used – which Ms Field failed to challenge, the panel said.

During the investigation, she admitted telling her tutor group that it is "not appropriate for a member of the LGBTQI to represent Ash Manor School".

She also admitted that she felt at that time that "children as young as 11 years old might be confused or uncomfortable with having Pupil I as a role model".

Chris Rushton, who chaired the panel, said: "There were numerous examples that a number of derogatory or hurtful remarks had been made by pupils against Pupil I based on Pupil I being transgender during the tutor group conversation.

"The panel found it concerning that Ms Field had allowed such hostile and derogatory language to be used and had not challenged it during the discussion.

"Ms Field admitted that at no stage during the discussion did she interject to admonish pupils for making derogatory comments."

Ms Field told the school's internal inquiry that she "deeply regret[s]" expressing her opinions about the student's suitability for the role.

She said: "It was not professional. I realise that now and regret the whole thing. At that point in time, my comment didn't show respect."

Alan Meyrick, for the Education Secretary, stopped short of banning Ms Field from the classroom, saying she had shown "clear and genuine remorse for her actions".

Well why can they have a head trans student position(possibly 2 positions), a head boy and a head girl?

I would be interested in what teachers think about this?

Considering it was so difficult to get our child's primary school to ever talk about the bullying and hostility that was evident amongst children and some parents I would be interested to know how a teacher managed to keep challenging conversations going without somehow being dissuaded from having them?

I am glad my secondary school teachers allowed open debate - and that I could share differing views from them without them being at risk of being demoted or taken in front of some board? But perhaps I am not understanding what goes on now?

Although I have no issue with the teacher speaking about issues like Trans she does need to be careful not to single out the particular trans person.

But surely having catergories would allow a trans head person (or 2).

I don't know the answer.

I’m glad DS’s school has ‘school captains’ and the most suitable candidates for the posts are chosen. They do like to have a balance between the sexes but the gender neutral titles would allow them to choose trans students for the role while side-stepping the question of sex vs gender.

If you specifically choose to have a head boy and a head girl, on the other hand, I would feel unhappy with two biological males then getting both roles.

GrimDamnFanjo · 29/07/2021 15:11

Why not have two head positions with one reserved for a biological female?

SeeYaBeYa · 29/07/2021 15:14

Well on the face of it a male student is pretty unrepresentative of a group of female students.

I agree. It really wouldn't send a good message to girls if the best 'girl' for the job was of the male sex, however they identify.

otoh Not giving the pupil a chance to be headpupil doesn't seem right either if they have the relevant skills.

They could have had 3 heads (but possibly that wouldn't have been seen as acceptable as not validating).

The teacher probably should have kept her views to herself and left it for SLT.

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 29/07/2021 21:09

Completely inappropriate of the teacher to discuss an individual student in this way with her tutor group and to disclose who she would and wouldn't be voting for for the position in question. Also completely inappropriate for her to allow students to use hostile and derogatory language about ANY student for ANY reason without challenging it. Absolutely she should have kept her views to herself.

GoWalkabout · 29/07/2021 21:30

I think she treated that pupil very badly. It is not ok to expose an individual to that kind of targeted personal censure based on their gender identity. If other pupils wanted to challenge the individuals candidacy they should be heard, however challenging that conversation. If the teacher wanted to challenge the candidacy they should have done so privately with the head of school.

DS school decided to get rid of head girls and head boys a few years ago and moved to head student. I wonder if it was with this sort of situation in mind (though how many trans 15 year olds are there, really?)

It just meant that rather than head boy, head girl and deputies, they ended up with three head girls and one head boy because the girls are better at presentation skills and getting themselves chosen. I think since they've changed the system they've had three girls and one boy every year!

GrammarTeacher · 31/07/2021 08:12

@WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice fully agree! Totally inappropriate and obvious bullying from the teacher.

Evvyjb · 31/07/2021 08:17

Really REALLY unprofessional conversation to be having. I'd be livid if one of my team did that.

The right action has been taken here.

Dahlietta · 31/07/2021 18:15

I agree. This isn’t about transgender issues so much as how this teacher spoke about, and permitted her pupils to speak about, an individual pupil.

@OhHolyJesus

Better phrasing: French Teacher sacked as they encourage and facilitate bullying of student
