Waiting List Movement Over Summer Hols

How much movement can you expect between now and Sept? I know... how long is a piece of string? 9th on a waiting list for a grammar that usually shifts up to 40 places by Sept - it's only moved 6 this year so far.

Doesn't sound hopeful. Many schools are closed over the summer too (and LA admission authorities) so you wouldn't hear anything until September.

I would.make sure your child is happy and ready to go to the school they have been allocated. Has the uniform and equipment. Has been to any induction/online events etc

KateBlush · 06/07/2021 09:16

Yes, you are right, and we're busily doing all that - DC very relaxed, I'm just privately musing. I do wonder if cancellation of all the transition events means that people who have no intention of taking up place won't get flushed out until they're a no show in Sept.

I have several friends whose children did one or two days at their school in September then got called up for waitlist places. It's worth being prepared to get a second set of uniform at very short notice!

I think more people are holding onto both a state and independent school offer this year than ever before due to financial uncertainty. A £20-£25k a year commitment is a big deal and many people who would have happily jumped in to a private education pre Covid are now more cautious.

It doesn’t help everyone else of course but I can see why parents might be doing this. Fingers crossed it moves a lot in September and you get your place.

I'm wondering too. DD is 20th for her 1st choice. We're in London so there can be quite a bit of movement but it's very much how long is a piece of string?!

bex12345 · 06/07/2021 15:00

I sincerely hope that movement happens although I'm not optimistic.... Two relatively small cohorts, 5th and 9th places and next to no movement so far...

KateBlush · 06/07/2021 15:13

It really has been cripplingly slow this year hasn't it? I think there's some hope that many on waiting list aren't actually waiting so one place being released would actually trigger significant movement - particularly the closer it gets to Sept

We applied to a school at the end of April. In May we were position 34 on list, in June we were 7th on list and yesterday we were offered a place! This was a central London borough and oversubscribed school, so movement does happen. There is quite a bit of movement once term starts again. Good luck!

Dobbyisahouseelf · 07/07/2021 13:15

I have a year 13 and in our area waiting lists moved up until the 1st week of schools starting in September so don't give up hope! I would probably buy minimal school uniform, keep upbeat about allocated school. If your DC doesn't get a place keep in touch with preferred school as I know a couple of children join a Grammar in year 8.

MrPickles73 · 08/07/2021 08:57

A friend of mine's joined grammar school at the October half term of yr 7 when another child dropped out.

bex12345 · 08/07/2021 09:18

We bought the allocated school uniform yesterday in the hope that it would trigger a wait list place to come up! Grin

MrPickles73 · 08/07/2021 10:17

allbex12345 this is almost guaranteed to work :-)

bex12345 · 09/07/2021 08:51

Here's hoping!!
