Cardiff secondary schools near Penylan

Hi,
We are thinking of relocating to Cardiff and Penylan seems like a lovely area and the one that would suit us best. We have a primary age child so know we would need a place to become available at primary but I think that would be ok.

But what do people do about secondary?

Everything seems quite focussed on Cardiff High but from what I've seen much of Penylan is too far away to get a place.

So what are the other options? Is the church school further north, St Teilos, good? (We are religious although not Anglican) what would be next nearest- Cathays? Willows?

We would almost certainly be looking at English speaking schools (DH is fluent in welsh but has never really spoken it at home)

Not Penylan, I know, but Bishop of Llandaff has an excellent reputation and is in a lovely area.
Whitchurch High also seems to do well.

Thanks!
We did have a look at Whitchurch as an area but it seemed a bit further out than we'd like.
Will check our Bishop of llandaff

Depending on your dc(s?) ages, I wouldn't dismiss Welsh medium school. Loads of kids come from English speaking homes and do really well 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Whitchurch has a station and Penylan doesn't!

They are still young. I'm not against welsh medium education but, as we're moving from England, I'm worried that it would be too many differences for the kids. They're already having to give up school, friends, house etc so I thought at least the language should be familiar. But maybe I am over thinking it?

Hi- I'm back. If anyone is still around, we have been having a rethink and now considering Whitchurch/rhiwbina.

What is Whitchurch High like? The last proper inspection says 'adequate' which doesn't sounds great tbh

Hi - what did you decide @cardiffdreamer?

cardiffdreamer · 11/07/2022 13:06

Hi, sorry for the lack of update. The last few months have been...interesting (as in massively stressful) we are still in our old house Confused
Tried to buy a place in pontcanna but that didn't work out. I think the schools are more straightforward there tbh.
Whitchurch there are no primary school places (we need an in year admission)
Now back to Pen y lan but even the estate agents are implying we shouldn't buy places due to the secondary school situation!
