Hi
My daughter is in Year 5 and we are moving to East sheen next month. We need to start applying to school. Along with some of the state secondary schools, we may have to consider independent schools. There many to choose from in the area but keen to meet an education consultant who can guide us about the schools based on what we are after and oir daughter's personality and interests. Please can you recommend you have first hand experience with in and around Barnes, Richmond, sheen areas? Thanks

Mel Ingle is great (you'll find her if you Google). She helped us when we were starting out on the whole process - very knowledgeable.

Thanks so much. I'll look her up. Can I ask if you don't mind sharing which school your kids ended up in?

Give Laidlaw Education a call. Very local, offer tuition, mock exams and sound school advice (at no extra cost).

I only have one DC. He's heading to Caterham following three years at Newton Prep to 13+.

Our problem, early on in the search, was that we didn't know anything at all about any of the schools that might be an option. Academic, sporty, what kind of kids thrive there etc, what might suit DS. This is what Mel helped us with. She's also very good on the application process, and has lots of knowledge of state schools too.

She didn't tell us 'what to do' but gave some very good grounding for further research and decision making.

Hope that helps.

Oh, I should have added that DC was in state primary until end of year 5. Neither DH nor I grew up in London so didn't have any feel for the schools.

We might be able to offer some insights too, if you can tell us what sort of things your daughter is interested in. Many of us have looked at lots of schools round here and have had children at them.

I guess the first one is do you want single sex or co-ed?

My dd has just left KGS (Kingston Grammar School) which is a co-ed independent school. She had a great time there. She's pretty outgoing, loves Drama and music, also did rowing which she really liked. It's a good fit for all rounder types, it's not very draconian and the pastoral care is fantastic. Sort of work hard play hard ethos. In her year there were loads of children from SW14 (it was the most represented post code) so that's good for local friendships too. Everyone gets the train in together and they make friends on it.
It's smallish (about 850 students incl sixth form) and obviously only half of those are girls, so everyone knows everyone.

Thank you. Sounds a lot like my daughter who plays the piano and is into performing arts. Is a bright kid academically but needs the teachers care and pastoral care. I will definitely have them on my shortlist. Always great to get first hand information.

Thank you
