Supportive thread for parents of Y12 students going into Y13.

That doesn't sound like a normal question, must say! Questions don't normally specify writing about 'the main character' in that way...

But, yeah, forgetting the name does speak volumes!!

Piggywaspushed · 22/06/2021 17:02

Oh zanda, I missed Nottingham off his sporty list. That was an oversight!

Monkey2001 · 22/06/2021 17:18

We did the Newcastle open day on Wednesday - they offer sports scholarships up to £10k, think you need to be at least county level, but may be worth looking into. I know Loughborough does them too, but I don't know much as we are not into sports.

@whoamitojudge

Hi. My DD is at college just finishing a L2 BTEC in Travel with predicted grades of double distinction, she is going back to do L3 next year. It's very interesting to read about the uni application processes as she doesn't want to go to uni so its not something that we have had to research. DD is extremely focused on ( hopefully) getting a cabin crew job at the end of L3 which is a 2 year course so we will wait and see how the travel industry picks up. Congratulations to you all that have posted your good news on here I've just caught up from the last thread!
@whoamitojudge I don't know how close to drinking age your Dd is but I did think of you fro the last thread when I discovered they were opening an cabin flight based bar, ( not sure how to describe) in Southampton
ealingwestmum · 22/06/2021 18:05

Great results from your DTs AuntieUrsula!

icanbewhatiwant · 22/06/2021 20:02

@Piggywaspushed I didn't ask about the exact wording of the question. But I just know it was to do with the main character. I don't even know if it was the only question, Ds said it was an essay type question. I shall ask him more sometime.

whoamitojudge · 22/06/2021 20:29

@Orangecinnamon21 I’ve just had a look at the website and it looks amazing.
DD will be 18 in October so it could definitely be a place to visit.
Thank you for thinking of us

I think it is on my list to visit now too!

KingscoteStaff · 22/06/2021 21:40

@Piggywaspushed sorry to talk shop, but can you think where I could find some silent movies to show my class? Evil baddies tying heroines to railway lines, Keystone Cops, Keaton, Chaplin. I've looked on Youtube but can only find short clips.

Sorry chaps, as you were.

Orangecinnamon21 · 22/06/2021 21:45

Dd has two job interviews for seasonal posts this week (let's not mention her short career in sandwich artistry at the well known chain).

One of them is a historic attraction ...I have everything crossed for her as I have heard those who work there get invited back each summer... security clearance is required! It is a place we used to get a 'locals' season ticket each year and spent a lot of time there when she was little.

Please keep fingers crossed too all!

The other job is pharmacy assistant , a bit less interesting.Grin

Piggywaspushed · 22/06/2021 21:49

I think Keaton only does shorts afaik. Its notoriously hard to find him .

Beautiful Sunrise and mad Nosferatu are in full on YouTube but don't really fit your brief although there is a good femme fatale in Sunrise. I definitely watched a whole Chaplin last year but it might have been DVD.

KingscoteStaff · 22/06/2021 22:01

Thanks Piggy - I thought they'd be on Amazon Prime!

icanbewhatiwant · 22/06/2021 22:02

@KingscoteStaff you have reminded me of ds1 he really enjoyed the buster keaton films. I think we have a dvd set of them. He also made a film with his mates in Keaton style. That was really good. Ds2 isn't into film studies as much.

Fiddlersgreen · 22/06/2021 22:33

Good luck to your DD with the interviews @Orangecinnamon21 it’s all good experience too.
DS has been looking for a job but no luck so far. There doesn’t seem to be much about here, all the restaurants are asking for 18+ and the retail vacancies mostly wanted complete availability. He has applied for a few things though so fingers crossed

ealingwestmum · 22/06/2021 22:35

Good luck to her Orange 🤞

Thanks all...must admit am worried as we are getting away for a week end of July.

She does break up after next week though (college). I hadn't quite realised how much seasonal work there is in the area ..we are quite lucky.

The most exciting place to work around where I grew up was Chessington Zoo !

Nard75 · 23/06/2021 05:58

Well done to everyone on driving successes and great exam results. DS exams aren't until September and these will be used for ucas predictions. He will have the whole summer of revising and at least if he had done them now like most schools he could've had a more relaxing summer.

Shimy · 23/06/2021 07:42

Good luck to Orange’s DD with the interviews. Nard What a pain having to delay everything until September. We’ve had exams like that in the past and literally the whole hols is taken up being on edge and studying. It’s very odd they should choose to do it that way as most schools are doing resits around that time.

crazycrofter · 23/06/2021 08:21

Good luck with DD’s interviews @Orangecinnamon21. Dd has some 11 plus tutoring starting next week, £30 a week for 2 hours. I hope she can remember her Maths!

Ds is desperate for a job but options for under 16s are so limited. Even paper rounds seem to be dying out.

Dd has Psychology and RS exams today, History tomorrow and then she’s done - just one paper per subject.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/06/2021 08:25

I’m trying not to panic here, but DD has only shown real interest in one uni (Exeter...because her friends want to go there and it looks nice Hmm), still has no firm idea what she’d like to study, hasn’t thought about writing a personal statement, has no real idea what her predicted grades might be (exam results not out yet), and DH and I have no idea where to start with help.
She’s currently more concerned about the various social engagements she’s been invited to between now and the end of term.

You all seem so switched on about the whole process - any words of wisdom?

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2021 08:32

My only words of wisdom are it's still really early, despite what many schools say!

I did learn from a school presentation last night that our lot will have a Jan 29th deadline , like the year before, for UCAS.

Fiddlersgreen · 23/06/2021 08:40

@Alsoplayspiccolo I’m in the same boat with DS, he has no clue what he wants to study or where he might want to study.
No mention of personal statements at all.
I’m hoping the college will start them on all that in September.
I wanted to try a few open days or even just visit some uni cities in the summer but we don’t have any idea where to go yet!

KingscoteStaff · 23/06/2021 08:48

With my far less together DS, I printed off 5 or 6 course descriptions (he at least knew roughly which subjects he fancied), redacted the university name and left them on the kitchen table. That started a conversation.

I don’t think they get motivated to work on PSs or prepare for aptitude tests until they have something specific to aim for.

EversoDelighted · 23/06/2021 08:56

Mine has only really started showing an interest since half term and even then its a bit half hearted, however he is sure he wants to stay within an fairly small radius of home (90 mins drive or thereabouts) and we have got a couple of subject areas of interest. I was talking to another mum yesterday with the same age DC but at college not DS's 6th form and she was quite surprised that we'd been to a couple of open days already and I am getting the same impression from a lot of my other friends too (most here go to the same college).

I did a version of this (not so organised , I just read them out!) and it was really useful with DS1.
