DD starting uni in London in September. What’s the right amount of money allowance she should have?

It depends on a multitude of factors: what is her accommodation like? is it a rented room in a flatshare or halls of residence? and is it catered or not? will she be commuting from home (if you're in London already)?

A lot, London is so expensive

SometimesALime · 31/05/2021 11:19

How much maintenance loan is she taking if any? How much is her accommodation? Is it catered? Will she need money for transport? Will she want to travel home mid semester?

Skatingpark97 · 31/05/2021 16:08

There are endless threads on this subject in the Higher Education section.

Thanks all -so I’m paying her accommodation -which is catered. It’s for the rest! All ideas/advice greatly welcomed! I have no idea what is reasonable for her to have as spending money without going under or over board!!

Will she get a student loan?

Cookerhood · 31/05/2021 22:05

We pay the accommodation & the DCs exist on the (minimum) student loan. They get jobs if they can as well.

Saira1234 · 31/05/2021 23:02

No student loan planned at the moment.

@Saira1234 can I direct you to a thread which has a lot of people talking about how much they will give. It is under the "Higher Education" section of Education as uni falls into that.

I know lots of children are at sixth form within their secondary school so lots of this sort of stuff falls into 3 threads, Secondary, Further Education (16-18) and then Higher (uni)

This has lots of MNetters on some who are already supporting their child financially.

My DD is about to finish uni, this is what we did for her.

She was eligible for the basic maintenance loan of approx. £4k, she was in Bath and her student accommodation in first year was approx. £6k, she put the first £4k to her accommodation and we paid the difference. Her accommodation was not catered so we also paid for her food shopping, either by arranging deliveries or transferring money to her so she could do her weekly shop, which included some alcohol.

She got a part time job which gave her approx. £100 a week to spend on socialising.

Thanks all - super helpful!!

DS starting at Cheltenham College. Does anyone know which out of Leconfield or Newick House is preferable?
Recent experience esp valuable!

I always post this link from Imperial College as a good guide. Be aware that it only calculates the costs for 39 weeks though. After the first year in halls, rental contacts for a house share will probably be for 52 weeks.
