SW London Girls' Private & Grammar - applying for year 7 in 2022

I watched with interest the information and support on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4177427-PART-3-SW-London-Girls-Indies-11-Results-Decisions-Panic-Over and wanted to start the same thread for South West London parents with daughters who will be applying for secondaries (independents and grammar) for places in year 7 in Sept 2022.

Where are you applying, how are the virtual open days going..... and to tutor or not to tutor?

A couple of years ago loads of schools had tests on the same day. Hoards of boys were pegging across Hammersmith Bridge between St Pauls and LU and also down the A3 to KGS. There were also clashes with KCS, Hampton and Emanuel and some of the girls' schools. This was all pre IESB and the exams all seemed to be crammed into the first week of January. I think in some ways it's better just to get them all over and done with in a short space of time...

Pigtastic · 09/10/2021 17:49

Hi all, we are struggling defining all the schools to apply for our DD.

She is bright, we are based in Wimbledon and she would prefer Co-ed schools. So far, we want to apply to Emanuel, Latymer Upper (where my other DD goes) and Godolphin and Latymer.
We still have to tour Kingston grammar and Putney High.
She didn't like WHS, Surbiton High and Marymount.

We are worried that we do not have a back up school (easy to get in) in our list.

Any suggestions for us?

dinosaurinmybelly · 09/10/2021 18:11

Hello Pigtastic - have you looked at Ibstock, Harrodian, Thomas’s Senior School, Fulham Prep? All co-ed.

Stircrazyschoolmum · 09/10/2021 20:06

I have friends with girls at Ibstock and Thomas’s both very happy. My DD is at PHS and FINALLY got to experience an open day today.. ironically as a participant as opposed to a visitor. She is absolutely loving it! (Obv no good if you prefer co-ed!)

Flossietea · 10/10/2021 08:09

Hi @Pigtastic have you looked at Radnor (coed) or St Catherine’s (girls) in Twickenham as good backup options? I also hear positive things about Streatham and Clapham High and Sutton High School.

refusetobeasheep · 10/10/2021 14:04

@pigtastic Claremont Fan Court is co-Ed and has amazing grounds

1forward2back · 10/10/2021 18:38

It’s very quiet on this thread so I thought I’d ask how people found the open mornings this weekend? I know PHS, WHS and JAGs were open. We went to Another gdst. What did people think?

cheese10 · 10/10/2021 18:39

@pigtastic both St John's and Epsom College have buses from Wimbledon

Pigtastic · 11/10/2021 11:37

Thank you all for the great suggestions! Will keep you posted on which school we will end up adding to the 3 selected so far.

Any first hand experience on Emanuel? In particular my daughter wanted to know how academic the school is and if they can stretch bright pupils.

sanam2019 · 12/10/2021 14:47

@1forward2back I guess activity will pick up here once exams kick off. Not long to go now. We visited Wimbledon High and really liked it. So all eyes on the exam, which will be our first.

refusetobeasheep · 12/10/2021 15:51

Our first is Surbiton High at the end of November ....

HighRopes · 12/10/2021 18:09

I was expecting it to get busier tomorrow, but the Tiffin stage 1 results are now coming out next Monday (Covid delays, I think).

We’ve been to a few open days - it’s going to be tough choosing where to apply, dd seems to like almost all of them. But I don’t want her doing too many exams.

1forward2back · 12/10/2021 19:42

@HighRopes where have you looked at? What’s her favourite do you think?

HighRopes · 13/10/2021 07:37

We’ve looked at WHS, PHS, SPGS, KGS, Sutton and Surbiton Highs. Only one she wasn’t so keen on was Sutton High, but that may be because it was the first and she didn’t ask many questions about the things she cares about. So we will need to narrow it down.

I was hoping the Tiffin stage 1 result would give us a data point to help, but that’s been delayed. When I did this a few years ago, it seemed that not getting through Tiffin stage 1 was a fairly good indicator that it would be wise to add a back up school or two if the original list was quite aspirational.

Ah those fun times ;-)) Parents and boys running from St.Pauls grounds, jumping in cars and zooming down the A3 , screeching to a halt outside, as boys ran in, still clutching a half eaten sandwich.
SkaterGrrrrl · 17/10/2021 21:06

How are we all doing?

Fingers crossed for everyone getting Tiffin results tomorrow.

👍🤞🤞🤞

HighRopes · 18/10/2021 16:13

Dd is through to Tiffin stage 2! I hope everyone else on the thread had good news, too.

Lockdowndramaqueen · 18/10/2021 16:36

Us too. Dd pleased and us too. Hope others are getting good news this afternoon.

sanam2019 · 24/10/2021 20:07

i noticed PHS and FHS second round dates overlap (Jan 19th), does anyone know if they have reserve dates for second rounds? I imagine it is tricky to move FHS as they involve group activities?

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 28/10/2021 12:44

Just popping on here as I was very active on the thread for girls starting September 2020. My DD is at PHS and super happy, happy to answer any questions. She got offers from 5 out of 6 schools- we turned LEH down for
Putney and have been happy with that decision. Good luck to all this year!

May I know why you turned down LEH for Putney?
HighRopes · 31/10/2021 15:55

Tomorrow is November, which is when things really ramp up. Dd liked pretty much all the open days, so we’re applying for a couple of extra ones, more than I had planned. So it’s 5 exams in November - Tiffin stage 2, WHS stage 1 (still waiting for any details on that), SPGS stage 1 (already booked in), Putney and Surbiton (which are right next to each other, unfortunately).

Does anyone know if Putney is using ISEB or something else this year? I can’t see on their website anything other than that it’s an hour, and it’s online.

NewToTwickenham · 01/11/2021 10:51

@HighRopes the website says ‘bespoke’ English and Maths online.

HighRopes · 01/11/2021 13:33

@NewToTwickenham I saw that, but it could mean anything really. I wondered if any prep school parents on this thread knew more, as I know the Heads of places like PHS go and do Q&As at local prep schools, and I would have thought they give out this sort of information.
