Kingston Grammar School - how much is an academic scholarship worth?

Hi I just wanted to get an idea of what kind of award an academic scholarship might be for KGS at 11+. We have a bright DS but probably wouldn't qualify for a bursary, although the fees (esp if DS2 went as well) would be beyond our reach. Just trying to figure out if it's even worth thinking about applying.

Some schools offer bursaries even if you make over 6 figures. They tend to say no if it’s above 200k though for obvious reasons

It can be a full scholarship.

@Nocutenamesleft thanks for the quick response! We are well under £200k but I have been put off bursary route because I heard they take into account the value of your house which seemed a bit much to me. So for KGS they can offer up to 100%? I had heard 10% so even splitting the difference would be good.

I think most of them are around the 10% mark...

When we looked at KGS (3 yrs ago) the academic (and/or sports scholarship, which was also a possibility) were each about 10% reduction on fees.

I think you are very very unlikely to get a 100% scholarship anywhere, academic or otherwise. Bursaries can be generous though, and could be 100% if you qualify. Your best bet is to have a conversation with the school's bursar directly and ask what you might be entitled to as different schools do things differently.

I think you can hold both a scholarship and a bursary, so might be worth applying for both?

CountessDracula · 27/05/2021 11:25

They do say
As a general guide, parents with a
combined income of £80,000 or
more are unlikely to qualify for fee
assistance unless there are special
circumstances that need to be taken
into account.

There was a dd on the girls thread 3 years ago who had a KGS 10plus place and got a good KGS scholarship offer at age 11 (maybe 50%) but she went to Latymer Upper on a 100% scholarship - she was at a state primary but very bright and excelled in a sport, violin and chess. What I'm saying is of your dc is so gifted to get a large academic scholarship from KGS then all the top schools will be lining up to offer similar amounts as they all want your dc. (Plus you normally have Tiffin in the bag too and the private schools know this).

If you live in/near wimbledon then Whitgift might be an option - their academic scholarships are up to 50%

You will find that trinity (also part of the Whitgift fondation) offers more generous scholarship and bursaries
