Hull college 14-16 any good?

What's the opinions on 14-16 colleges here on MN, my lad isn't the best at school and he'd do much better in a more liberal school atmosphere, would 14-16 bring this to him? Hull college is what we are going with if there's any personal experiences?

What do a) Ofsted and b) results look like?

My fear would be that it could be full of disaffected pupils and that the more 'liberal' atmosphere might mean less pressure to knuckle down to core subjects.

He's always struggled with the set ridged traditional state schooling, been excluded etc. Where can I find the ofsted and results?

The results don't look great, but kids doing well in school wouldn't be looking to move there, so you have to look in that context.

Yeah I see that, also going for the vocational as he's always been a whizz at vehicles, which apparently it has good ratings for

Ron Dearing has better outcomes but might not be appropriate if your son is struggling with exclusions etc.

What have his current school said? Would they support placements elsewhere part time, st Patrick's etc?

EwwSprouts · 25/05/2021 19:46

Hull College has big finance problems and the leadership has been in the papers for all the wrong reasons. My worry would be will it stay open for the full two years from Sept if that is your timescale.

His current school have sent information about 14-16's, hes said he's not interested in Ron Dearing (bad opinions from mates already at hull college who know kids there), he's wanted to do the vehicle motor course for a while

Hi there! I am a former student of the 14-16. I can tell you firsthand that the education is shocking and there are often massive staff shortages in the core subjects leading to multiple supply teachers covering lessons every week, the tutors themselves have very questionable morals and are open about the fact that they do not care about students results in the long run as long as they “get paid at the end of the month whether you get your GCSE’s or not” (yes that is an actual quote from a tutor). Students themselves were quite lovely and bullying was never an issue, just the tutors. Vocational options such as motor vehicle were brilliant. Definitely consider wisely before going, as I said in terms of students he should get on fine it’s just the core subject side of it that I would worry about!

I did my PGCE at Hull. Hull College is fantastic. The students really enjoy the things they learn and tend to perform better than expected.

DingDongThongs · 04/06/2021 20:21

Has he had an ADHD assessment op?

nixnjj · 04/06/2021 20:28

Do it, sound like my lad. Hated school confidence being destroyed. He's just finishing now and on to the mechanics course for next year. Confident popular with a good group of mates. It's really not the place for troubled kids and encourages free thnking

nixnjj · 04/06/2021 20:30

Sorry just RTT and realised your local college has issues.

Clyde2 · 07/06/2021 22:26

No they don’t @DingDongThongs
Look at the compare data gov website, on average they do worse in their resits than they did the first time for example.
