Commuting to Magdalen College School from Reading

My son has been offerred a 13+ place at MCS for this September. As we live in Reading, it is a bit of dilemma for us. Is there anyone commute to MCS from Reading on daily basis? I would like to learn about the experience. Thanks.

train? car? or school bus?

Ellmau · 25/05/2021 19:33

The one in Oxford? That's half an hour on the train.

Yes. 25minn on the train, then 25min walk to school. The school says some students are from Reading. I want to know if it is feasible to manage this on daily basis. My son does not mind the trek, but I need to think all scenarios. Currently my son is in Reading School, hence we are a bit hesitant.

The school bus leaves Reading at 6.30am, and we are a bit far from the bus stop, hence won't consider it. If there is any car pooling from Reading it would be great.

Could you not drive him to the bus stop. Seems a bit weird to rule it out completely

I'd stick at Reading personally.

OP, your ds is already at a very good school - South East secondary state school of the year 2020 by the Sunday times.
How do you think he will benefit by moving with such a long commute? If you are considering Oxbridge don't forget the constant pressure on O and C to accept state school applicants over private school applicants.

My friend lives in Reading and her daughter is in the sixth form. She travels in daily.

keeven · 25/05/2021 22:54

The reason we want to move him is because my DS is a reactive person. I think he will benefit from a more competitive environment.

That makes sense, best of luck to your ds, either way he is having / will have a great education.

MayIDestroyYou · 26/05/2021 08:35

I don't understand.

Surely you knew where you lived when you put him through the application process?

LIZS · 26/05/2021 08:44

Do you intend to move closer? It is not an impossible journey but a pita for extracurriculars, parents events, concerts, matches etc
