EPQ changing schools for U6th - Which school should submit?

Lotty32 · 19/05/2021 12:56

DD changing schools for U6th as we are moving house. She will have completed and presented her EPQ but her current school says they cannot submit the EPQ. Her new school says they cannot as the EPQ has to be overviewed by the same tutor all the way through.

I think her current school are passing the buck?

Anyone else experienced this? X

I don't think her old school would be able to enter a student who is no longer on roll. However the new school haven't been involved in the process so can't really be the ones to assess it. One would hope that an arrangement could be made whereby the old school assesses it and sends any records through to the new school so they can submit it. The new school will have to trust the professionalism of the old school, and moderate it alongside their students'.

Maybe the old school could enter her if the new school pays?

Both good suggestions from lanthanum. I am HPQ coordinator and officially we do not enter students no longer on roll. This year I passed on two HPQs to new schools. We communicated our internally assessed grades and I assume the entries went ahead. I imagine, however, that we might enter someone as an external candidate if there was a genuine reason to do this.

I'd have thought the epq was the last thing to worry about - changing halfway through A levels is going to be hugely problematic!

looptheloopinahulahoop · 20/05/2021 09:49

It depends on the courses I suppose. If the schools are following the same exam boards it might be ok - and anyway, following covid and months of missed face to face, it's probably the one time that it won't make a massive amount of difference.

lanthanum · 20/05/2021 09:51

If she's got the EPQ out of the way already, it sounds as if she may be on top of things and will be able to use the summer to work on any curriculum mismatches. One spin-off of the lockdowns is that schools are probably better equipped with materials to send to someone who has missed a chunk of the course. It's not a good time to move, but sometimes it can't be helped - hopefully her subjects are ones where the mismatch between what has been covered isn't too huge.

It's not just the same boards though, it's being taught the content in the same order. If OP's dd's current school teach x topic in year 2, and the new one teaches x in year 1, the dd won't ever have been taught x. And grade boundaries next year will be high to try and redress the inevitable inflation from teacher grades.

Thx for all your replies on the subject of my DD's EPQ.

For those interested (!) my DD is highly intelligent, motivated and as she's studying languages and economics and is on track for 3 A*s - can frankly teach herself! Of course we are aware of different course requirements and have addressed these!

And if you are still interested (!) we are moving areas hence the school move.
