16 and 17 with health problems have already been done in Group 6. Although I think asthmatics were a ‘yes then no’ so maybe they are next.

icanbewhatiwant · 15/06/2021 22:44

Yes I'm assuming it meant they'd been done already. The article I read just said no plans at the moment to vaccinate others in that group. Not sure Ds2 will want a vaccine. I hope so. But it's his decision.

Zebracat · 16/06/2021 12:22

Hello everybody. Wondering how the practice exams went. Ours feels they went very well indeed, but listening to her, I am a bit worried that she may have misinterpreted the questions. Ah well, good to find out now while there is still time to correct it. And it could have been worse. She got in such a state about the first one that she vomited and was then too scared to eat for a few days. She has a very delicate digestion, and once, disrupted its incredibly difficult to restore.

Monkey2001 · 16/06/2021 13:46

Just seen that vaccine bookings are open for 21 year olds now, my 20 year old should be able to sign up soon. Exciting!

@Zebracat hope she had not misread the question, but if she has that the teacher is kind! Our lot are in such a strange position as there have not done any external exams.

Horace123 · 16/06/2021 15:39

I can't remember who was asking but in case anyone is interested the government has just published its decision following the consultation on arrangements for non-exam assessment and fieldwork requirements for students doing exams in 2022. Sorry I don't have time to go through it (supposed to be working!) but from memory it affects dance, design and technology, drama, film, food prep and nutrition, media studies, music and PD. And I think there is something about fieldwork for geography and environmental science.
Struggling to link to the announcement but it is on gov website. From a really quick look it seems they will implement all the proposals they set out in the consultation.

orangecinnamon · 16/06/2021 16:23

Thanks @Horace123! It may have been me. Dd has just got an A for her performance element (about a third weighting) which she is chuffed with so interested to see what happens to that part of the assessment. Composition is another third...that's ok as long as it comes out 'how it is in my head' apparently....

orangecinnamon · 16/06/2021 16:26

Should clarify the A is for her mock assessments taken a couple of weeks back

Ds has an exam Tuesday and another weds. Just an hour each. They only need go in for exams. But I know dh will moan at having to take him and collect. It takes 15 mins to drive there. So if it were me I think I'd just sit and wait. The following week he has one on Tuesday, one thurs but weds he has 2. Ds wasn't happy when I told him he might not have school Monday but I want him up before I go to work. He wants to sleep until lunchtime. Then he will want to watch the football in the eve. So he can get up!

sansou · 16/06/2021 17:28

Y9DD has been sent home due to her school friend testing +ve along with a third of the year group. They LFT the whole year group and then sent the close contacts home.

A third of the year?! Wow. Looking like it is lucky they cancelled external exams this year!
Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2021 19:17

We have mobile testing units at our school due to big year 9 outbreak.

sansou · 16/06/2021 19:36

I meant that a third of the year group was identified as close contacts so sent home to SI for 10 days. (Form class plus all the different subject lessons). NOT that a third of the year group tested +ve. Only one +ve confirmed case (LFT & PCR). This is my Y9 DD so slightly irrelevant to a Y12 thread. Better safe than sorry I guess. Good thing all school exams finished last week!

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2021 20:14

DS done well in exams so far : A* in sociology (not unexpected) and it seems an A (so far) in economics, possibly better.

Has now announced he is thinking of an economics degree. He isn't doing maths A Level so that does reduce the field a little. MN wisdom is always horrified at the thought of an economics degree without maths A Level.

crazycrofter · 16/06/2021 21:27

Wow @Piggywaspushed, great results! I know nothing about economics degrees, but what about doing a joint social sciences degree as he's obviously good at Sociology too? What is his third subject?

Ds is still isolating due to the latest positive lateral flow; we're waiting to see if the PCR is positive.

Dd is currently revising on the trampoline as her room is too distracting!

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2021 21:33

His third subject is history.

He was really drawn to a governance, politics and economics degree at Edinburgh and a social/economic history degree at Glasgow but I think he thinks Scotland is a bridge too far and resents paying fees there.

Birmingham do a new degree in politics, policy and economics so he may look at that too.

They had UCAS session at school today where I suspect he saw some potential earnings stats!

Shimy · 16/06/2021 21:50

Piggy that is such good news, what fantastic grades! Has he considered a BA as opposed to Bsc in Economics? no Maths required for that although it is debatable how much Maths content is in the actual BA degree. The new course at Birmingham you mentioned sounds great too.

Quick digress -
Is it raining near everyone? How marvellous the cool breeze is after that stifling and sticky weather all day.

EversoDelighted · 16/06/2021 21:53

It's rained steadily here since about 8pm but I have just walked home from about 1/2 a mile away and it is still very warm and humid.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2021 21:54

Yeah, he's been looking at soem BAs. Lancaster, Manchester, and a few others.

And a few , like Leeds and Birmingham, don't require maths.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2021 21:56

Wish it was bloody raining here. It's stifling.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/06/2021 22:11

Piggy that’s great news on the grades, well done to your DS!
DS just has Eng Lit left on Monday. Don’t know when they will get their grades. I’m hoping he gets similar to your DS! 😀

Worrying about all these positive COVID tests.

We have rain too. I think that’s summer finished now, yes?

Shimy · 16/06/2021 22:28

That’s probably summer over now, who knows? I’ve got all the windows open and the rain combined with the heat from the ground is making everywhere smell like the tropics when you’re on holiday. I think this is the closest I’ll come to a holiday this yr.

Fiddlersgreen · 16/06/2021 22:49

It’s raining here too but still very hot and sticky.
DS has finished exams for now but not sure when we get results.
Can’t believe we’re nearing the end of year 12, it feels like they’re still settling in!

Quick question, do your DC get themselves up and out for college/6th form?
DH is working from home and recently DS has been falling back to sleep after his alarm so DH has had to go and wake him so he’s not late! It’s happened so many times now I’m concerned for when DH returns to the office as we’ll both be leaving the house around an hour before DS needs to get up!

Yes Dd gets herself up @Fiddlersgreen BUT she has a 15 min walk and 10am start. As hard as it is to try...you could try just leaving him to it and suffering the consequences ?
Monkey2001 · 17/06/2021 00:17

@Fiddlersgreen we have to wake DS up most days, although it is getting better. At the beginning of the year I had to wake him up and phone him 15 minutes later to check he had not gone back to sleep.

@Piggywaspushed would your DS consider AS maths next year? Maths is very helpful for economics. Have you used DiscoverUni to check earnings following degree courses? That was what made DS2 realise he did not want to be a physiotherapist - he wants to earn enough to buy a Tesla!
