DS did a Birmingham online thing this week and has done Lancaster too which seems to be the favourite. Booked for Cardiff York and Warwick. Cardiff also doing in person tours - not inside buildings though I don’t think - we might do that over the summer but we know Cardiff well anyway as DH is from there originally. Going to drive to York and Lancaster over half term for a wander round if possible as York only 40 minutes away and Lancaster about an hour and a half - make a day of it! Cambridge he has done some online stuff and went with school pre lockdown. Exams done here. No idea how he did....

crazycrofter · 27/05/2021 10:22

I’m impressed with all those engaging with open days! Dd still says she’s not happy that year 12 is almost over! She’s decided to do occupational therapy but I’m concerned it’s a decision made with very little thought! And she wants to go to a RG uni so says she’ll decide between Southampton and Liverpool. Obviously she may not get an offer from them and will need to apply to three more but it’s a plan of sorts...

EversoDelighted · 27/05/2021 10:36

Mine has found it hard to navigate some of the online ones by himself so we have said "save them for the weekend and do them together" and never made time. I think part of it is denial about having to leave his beloved school next year.

Wheresthebeach · 27/05/2021 11:01

We booked some open days last night.
However DD distraught as chemistry exam went badly.

Monkey2001 · 27/05/2021 11:18

@Wheresthebeach our school sent a nice email saying they know that this lot have very little exam experience, so hopefully all schools will be kind and positive about what you can learn from this batch, even if they don't do justice to themselves.

Manchester also doing in-person campus tours every Wednesday and Thursday until start of September.

Wheresthebeach · 27/05/2021 11:22

@Monkey2001 thanks - school being lovely and supportive. I've just never seen her so upset so its distressing and worrying. Gah.

sandybayley · 27/05/2021 11:31

@Wheresthebeach - sorry to hear that.

You'll know this already but what I often find with DD is that when she gets that upset about something it often means there is something else bothering her. Sometimes I work this out at the time but quite often it's afterwards when I make the connection.

Wheresthebeach · 27/05/2021 11:34

@sandybayley - the school just cancelled Gold DofE on the same day and she was looking forward to Snowdonia so it may have been that as well.

But I think she's genuinely scared she won't get the marks she needs for the course she wants to do. She's dyslexic so she does get stressed and find remembering Chemistry much more difficult than Biology or Geography.

Seeline · 27/05/2021 11:54

DD has done some online open days - last year I think. She didn't find them at all helpful, and really can't remember what was said by who. I think it is difficult to get a feel for a place and remember what relates to which place with out having the visual clues and memories of the events. I went on some open days with DS 3 years ago and can still distinguish between them because I can remember the room where the talk was and where we had lunch and whether it was rainy or sunny etc.

Can't do any visits over half term as she has exams straight after and all the ones she wants to see are at least a day trip if not overnight stays. All the actual campus tours seem to finish before she breaks up.

WE had a virtual meeting on UCAS and uni application process last night. Her school seem to like to be ahead of the game and have set an internal deadline of Sept 23rd for the finished thing so that they can check it and have them submitted by October half term! Ideally five choices visited and decided on when they go back in Sept, with final draft of PS ready for first day back.

DD having a bit of a wobble, saying she hasn't got a plan B, and what if she doesn't want to do psychology after all - this has been her plan since about Y10 - arghh

crazycrofter · 27/05/2021 12:11

It's all quite scary I think, having to make big decisions this early. I think the lockdowns mean that they don't feel they've had as much time as usual. Especially the first one, where my dd just lived in a bubble of decorating her room and playing guitar!

@seeline, my dd was planning to do Psychology from about year 10/11, but has now decided on occupational therapy. We tried to work out what the long term goal was, what she could see herself doing and then worked backwards from there. She realised she probably didn't see herself as a clinical psychologist as she wanted to be more hands on. We also discovered that occupational therapists can train in psychotherapy.

Seeline · 27/05/2021 12:20

@crazycrofter DD wants to be a psychologist (I think!!) She is really interested in developmental psychology, but I have to say I don't really know where that might take her.

I agree about it all coming round so fast. They've hardly had any Y12.

crazycrofter · 27/05/2021 12:56

The good thing about a Psychology degree, is it doesn't really close any doors. Dd just doesn't really enjoy academic study.

orangecinnamon · 27/05/2021 13:08

We are spending the day pootling round Cardiff on Thursday. Haven't booked a tour but quite easy to walk around as non campus but all concentrated in one area.
My boss runs undergrad psych courses will see if she has any info on destinations. Lots of them go on further to specialise in masters. Lots go and work in data e.g office national stats as those SPSS skills come in handy.

Cardiff is one of the places we want to visit.

FoolsAssassin · 27/05/2021 13:46

I went from Cardiff to work in research in Bristol and King’s after a Psychology degree, many many moons ago when everything was very different.

orangecinnamon · 27/05/2021 13:49

@Seeline

Cardiff is one of the places we want to visit.
They have a self tour guide on their website, pretty sure they have talked about on campus open days soon ...maybe July?

We're going to either Southampton or Liverpool at half term - but on the condition that we don't make it a uni tour and we just look around the city. Dd is adamant it doesn't matter what the uni buildings look like, it's the vibe of the city she's interested in. And dh must not take control or give his opinion! Poor dh is too outspoken. I try very hard to appear objective and neutral about everything and just direct via the facts I present!

Monkey2001 · 27/05/2021 16:28

We have booked a Cardiff tour for Wednesday. It was a bit confusing because they say 10:00 or 2:00, but when you select, it offers you a range of morning or afternoon slots. Prefer the idea of a guided tour so the student leading can give us a feel for student life there.

Ooh Monkey I didn't realise you could do that ! I'll put it too Dd. The new student life centre looks great , all in all it looks like a fab day out anyway.

@crazycrofter I do think Southampton suffers a bit because it is not as grand as some. I use to have to go there for work quite a lot and Highfield campus itself has a nice vibe. The city is nice in parts, I like the shopping centre .

But your Dd might be more interested in the clubs etc.

I’ll be waving to all of you who are Cardiff-bound this half term! 🖐🏻

DD has no real idea of where she wants to go, or even what she wants to study (was film...then English...now theatre studies...maybe 🙄)
DH and I both went to music conservatoires, so have no idea where even to start with looking. School haven’t said anything, at least, not to us.
It all feels a bit overwhelming.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 27/05/2021 19:52

Meant to say, the only thing DD does know is that she DOESN’T want to go to Cardiff Uni!

Lol @alsoplayspiccolo (waves back on Thurs) Lots of time left for decisions.

Would be interested in feedback on Cardiff. DD going to apply to the conservatoire.

Still awaiting DDs driving licence here too.

DD didn’t get the job she applied for, a bit disappointed but realises she wouldn’t really be able to fit it in.

Roll on half term

Alsoplayspiccolo · 27/05/2021 22:03

Paddington, DS is at the junior RWCMD and DH studied there. What instrument does your DS play, and which other colleges is he considering? (I went to the Guildhall as an undergrad, and RAM for post grad).
