PREVIOUS THREAD

A thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Going forward suggest new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Corona Cohort' or similar in title just to make it easier to find. Not fussy about who starts those !

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary - at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out.

At presentCovid infection rates are lowest they've been for a long time. Activities such as meet ups, lessons and driving tests have started again. Albeit delayed for some. Some have submitted EPQs and some passed their driving tests 👏 Summer term brings Mock exams, more testing, possible open days. Also hope there will be lots of social activities and sunshine.

@Zandathepanda ooh....I've never had an email when tagged. Should we? Just place marking so I keep the thread.

Zandathepanda · 09/05/2021 17:59

Maybe I am getting confused with private messages? I have definately had emails before.

p.s. Grin spellchecker I am not correcting that - I’m not H - but I have just had my covid jab which is making me whoozy and unable to spell, therefore only good for mumsnetting on the sofa and looking through Uni prospectuses. With chocolate. Good use of a Sunday I would say.

Talking of marketing, I think DS actually finds crack marketing squad Birmingham a bit tedious. They go 'Russell Group, Russell Group blah blah' according to him! But they are very good at outreach and so many unis aren't. Nottingham is the easiest to reach non London big RG uni to us and yet you would not know they existed in terms of outreach. They do remain popular , however.

Fiddlersgreen · 09/05/2021 18:34

Thank you for the new thread @orangecinnamon
I didn’t get an email when you tagged me but I’ve definitely have in the past 🤔

DS had been in college full time since Easter holidays whereas before they did alternate weeks in college and then online at home.
He says it’s much busier with everyone there and not much social distancing, haven’t heard about any cases yet though.
He’s still not decided on what to do after A levels, I have thrown a few prospectus’ into his room in the hope he’ll be inspired but he hasn’t even looked. I don’t even care if he takes a gap year or works instead of uni but I just want him to have some ideas!

estherfrewen · 09/05/2021 18:39

Thanks for the new thread. DS has exams starting week Monday- just one exam in each but proper exam conditions although no study leave and normal timetable. He’s favouring Lancaster at the moment, and is starting to narrow options. Has ditched Durham. We are going to drive to York over half term for a look - only 40 minutes away.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/05/2021 18:48

@Fiddlersgreen I ordered a couple of prospectuses. Ds won't look at them either.

He says if he goes to university he's going to Sussex. He's not looked at courses, but apparently they watch lectures from Sussex in their history lessons. But I don't think he wants to go to university anymore.

I was sitting with ds3 (year 7) Friday, looking at his maths. Ds2 came home from school and started looking at it too....he asked ds3 why he'd answered all 10 questions. Ds3 told him they have to. Ds2 said....when I was your age I would have answered the first question, seen it was easy and not bothered with the rest. No wonder I was always told he works very slowly!!

FoolsAssassin · 09/05/2021 20:01

Thank you !

ealingwestmum · 09/05/2021 20:11

Thank you Orange! Evening all Smile

KingscoteStaff · 09/05/2021 20:24

Lovely new thread. Look at that space. Let's put in more storage.

sandybayley · 09/05/2021 20:38

Hello again.

Rather worryingly DD is now suggesting some 'road trips' this summer to check out university towns with friends who've passed their driving tests 😬

Bang goes my mini breaks!

I shouldn't be too cross. That's exactly why we did in 6th form.

EwwSprouts · 09/05/2021 20:54

Orange thanks for tagging me.

Ds has had a much needed sporty day. Caught up with a bunch of friends from further afield.

It's coming to light a lot of his friends are getting p/t jobs as lockdown lifts and it's throwing up some interesting info. Apparently two McDonalds 5 miles apart pay different rates. One girl works in Subway and another works in a Subway within a patrol station and they pay her too so it's double wages!

Oblomov21 · 09/05/2021 21:19

Thank you Orange OP.

ProggyMat · 09/05/2021 21:23

Thanks, Orange!

Fferny1 · 09/05/2021 22:08

Thank you @Orange.
Dd2 did her second lot of exams last week. Had the first lot before Easter and the third lot she says next week ?

EversoDelighted · 09/05/2021 22:53

Thank you for the new thread @orangecinnamon.

DS has done an in-house exam for one of his BTEC subjects in lieu of the real one he should have had this month. He has been worrying about this module since Sept, worked really hard for it through the Easter hols and got a very decent mark which is a huge relief reckon I could pass it myself after all the time I spend testing him.

He has put out some feelers for voluntary work / work experience, starting to think he should now look for a proper p/t job (he only has a weekend paper round at the moment) but he is still doing a lot of sport. Hockey "season" ends next week so he'll be free on Saturdays after that.

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2021 23:01

Thanks for the very professional thread with all those tags. My mumsnet emails go to spam.

Somebody talked about University print services a while ago. I got the orders of service for my father in law's funeral done in the Bristol University print shop, was brilliant - excellent quality, quick and cheap!
