Hi am wanting to hear what people know about Ark Acton Academy as a Secondary school?
Any good? I believe it was Acton High School till 2017 and was doing well when it opened and not so good by the time it shut, then became Ark Acton 2018 but no OFSTED reps etc.
Anything about this school would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

Went to an open morning there this term and wasn’t impressed. The SLT described the atmosphere as “calm and purposeful” but to me it felt silent and disengaged. The kids seemed very withdrawn even in sixth form. The lessons we observed were very chalk and talk - with the exception of the art teacher who seemed knowledgeable and engaging. Walls in the academy hallways and classrooms very bare - no students’ work displayed, just painted breeze blocks.

Great sports facilities, but the overall subject offer is very limited and I think it’s a terrible waste to have wonderful DT facilities mothballed as they don’t offer any DT now or for the foreseeable (according to the head). So no textiles, no food tech and no product design, which lots of other local schools do offer. Only one foreign language offered now (French). Religious Studies GCSE is compulsory. Drama not offered now, but may be back in a couple of years.

Very homework heavy and it’s all screen based - adaptive quizzes etc. Lots of internal assessment too, weekly by the sounds of it.

Kids stay in their form rooms, and the teachers rotate round to them, which is a Covid measure they have decided to make permanent. Lots of co-curricular stuff, but I didn’t warm to certain clubs being compulsory.

From a personal point of view, I wasn’t keen on the tone the head took - it felt very “my way or the highway” and “we know best”. Very rigid, very disciplinarian atmosphere there and I felt there was no adaptability. I asked a question, but I felt that the head avoided the substance of my query. Overall, it felt rather austere and quite punitive (there were lists of kids who had been sent to detention that week - and what for - on the walls) and that kind of naming and shaming approach is not for me. I feel like there are other, better options in Ealing, Hounslow and Hammersmith & Fulham that are worth exploring. We won’t be applying.

My child started there in September, unfortunately they were the only place that would take my child (SEN).

so far not impressed for 3 main reasons.

1 lack of communication, if you phone up you get an answer machine you leave a message on, I have done that a couple of times now and they dont check the messages they call you to moan a couple of hours later about unauthorised absence, responding to emails is a bit well better then 50/50 but it often looks like rushed responses with not all the answers you want so you have to email them back. if they do call you back its from a private number so you have no idea who it was.

they have 2 apps (technically 3 if your kids not on free school meals) neither are very good and are generic things from the app store.

If your kid gets detention you get a text at 2.40pm to tell you, I think thats pretty late, whats worse is if the detention is cancelled they only do that after school time, so they try to contact you at 3.45 (15 mins after normal school time ends), so in my case I am already out on my way to pickup taking into account the detention time they told me at 2.40.

reason 2 is the detentions discipline its far too punitive, 20 mins for not having the top button on your shirt done up, shirt not tucked in etc, 40 min detention for turning up late to school and there is no leeway if your kids run upto the gate at 8.30 it will be slammed in their face (seen that happen a couple of times to kids standing there talking to their parents who suddenly make a move as the caretaker starts shutting it), detention for talking in the corridors during class transition etc. tbh after 3 weeks getting detention is meaningless no one cares parents or children alike, its so punitive its completely meaningless, its just part of the school week rather then something bad to be avoided if you see what I mean its just shrug detention again.

3 is the uniform code, its not as bad as places like Alperton for example where it states on their website kids will be forced to do P.E barefoot if they do not have plan white trainers (Ark doesnt care what colour your trainers are as long as they dont have big logos on and they certainly dont make kids do P.E barefoot) but its the winter coat rules, not had to deal with that yet as its warm but no hoods allowed, where the hell do you get a kids winter coat without a hood? Marks and spencers dont sell a single one for a start.

on the plus side its right next to a tube station and close to bus stops, they have therapy (not started yet) and the counseling service is up and running my child likes that and my child says the learning in class is good and he likes the school dinners (he didnt like the school dinners at his primary and insisted on packed lunch).

"Kids stay in their form rooms, and the teachers rotate round to them"

according to my child they change rooms for the music, art and P.E.

"here were lists of kids who had been sent to detention that week - and what for - on the walls) and that kind of naming and shaming approach is not for me"

thats not naming and shaming, they have to check that list to see if they are on it, its how the kids know they have detention that day, they then go to the detention room at the end of the day ( see my issue with detention and cancelled detention because they dont talk to the kids about what they did to get a detention or if they have a valid reason for not having a tie etc until the end of the day). and as I said no one cares and we are only 3 weeks its just part of the day everyone gets a few detentions a week the staff dont make a fuss or care about it, the kids obviously arent bothered about it they all get them, so its not shaming its infact completely meaningless, my kid just uses the time to draw or read, some just sit in the room on their phones (they are allowed to keep phones turned off and in their bags) no one cares they all just find something to do, its not anything other then just part of school life there. so in that respect it fails miserably.

Thanks for flagging - the deputy head told us that they stay in form room for almost all lessons, but you’re quite right, art, music and PE use specialist rooms. All the science labs were empty when we visited on a Friday, and I asked the Year 8 or 9 child who showed us around and he said they hardly used them and did science in form rooms. Seems such a shame.

Might be worth checking around other schools if you’re not happy - there may be some movement this term as some people find the school they chose isn’t quite for them? Not sure about SEN provision, and you certainly know more than me, but I’d guess it might be worth calling around anyway, just in case somewhere else has a place opened up, if you’re not impressed where you are?

I said yes to them because they have lots of therapy, its not started yet but that was the main thing and its good he is getting counseling there in the meantime. we shall see, academics are secondary to severe anxiety issues.

1 on my list was full they only had 300 SEN spaces and the new school thats opened near me has no SEN at all and wouldnt take him because of that, alperton sounded more strict etc and the bully went to another (also SEN) I dont want him in with him. as I have to take him and pick him up it cant be too far away, I dont have a car and am on benefits

PrimaryMumma · 25/09/2021 14:26

Awww, I hope he settles in and it all comes good for you both. Severe anxiety is so tough. Sending you lots of good wishes and keeping my fingers crossed.

well that didnt last long, zero communication, still no idea how to hand in homework online, 20 mins detention for every single one not submitted. or 20 mins detention for inadequate homework (how can a score of 82% be inadequate?).

i haven spoken to two people, emailed twice with no reply, phone calls go to answering machine, how can it be so hard to find out how your supposed to submit online homework? and what good does detention do? if a child isnt getting good enough marks on the online quiz that shows they need help to learn not locked in a room for 20 mins.

I have given up and emailed CAMHs about them now, I really dont know what else I can do but see if CAMHs can get any sense out of them or just try to change schools, its a shame because the SEN provision is good but its like the school is split into two completely different parts, one good and supportive the other a complete clusterfuck.

PrimaryMumma · 07/10/2021 16:53

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. Hoping that you can get a solution that works for you soon and the support you need.
