DS has recently been assessed as having a vision impairment which means he has a coloured overlay - I have supplied this to him so he Can use at school

Assessor has suggested that School provide him with specific coloured exercise books to assist him ? I was going to buy and supply myself .

If your DD/Ds has a similar issue did their school supply them with the appropriate coloured exercise books for every subject or do you provide ?
TIA

I would expect the school to source this if it has been suggested by a member of the visual impairment team for example. Does he have an EHCP? Has he had input from the VI team and has a report been written?

Who did the assessment? I did my NASENCo dissertation on IRLENS syndrome and found some very differing opinions and investigations on it.

In my school (primary) if a child has had a private screening which recommends specific coloured lenses, we provide acetate overlays but it’s nigh on impossible to get the same colour exercise books, and even more impossible to get hold of text books. Coloured lenses are by far the best option. Our LA does not carry out IRLENS screening.

Yes, Irlens is quite controversial.

My school would print exams on specific coloured paper if necessary, but I've never heard of coloured exercise books. I think the overlay would be the cheap and therefore favoured option.

Hi
My secondary school will supply both the exercise books (we have students who need pink / yellow or blue paper) and the overlays (as they should!)
One thing I have learnt is cut the overlay in half so when if they lose it they have the other half!

TenaciousOnePointOne · 05/05/2021 20:49

I’d buy them. Lots of schools/teachers think it’s one colour that works but it’s specific to the person. Some opticians can test for the colour that works and crossbow education stock them.

MumofSpud · 05/05/2021 20:50

Actually, Do you mean coloured TEXT books? That is where the overlay comes in.

EmilyEmmabob · 05/05/2021 21:03

My school provide coloured paper/exercise books as part of IEPs but also as part of formal assessments etc. I think most (good) schools would provide whatever was needed for students to succeed so email them and organise a meeting. They need to know how to help your child if they don't already know.

We have some kids that need yellow paper and some blue so our SEN department buys a block of them from Espo and distributes to the relevant class teachers. Then the kids have their overlays for textbooks.

I know Irlens is controversial but there's no harm in a kid having a different colour book and it does, whether it's a placebo or real, seem to have a positive impact on some students.

A block of exercise books with the relevant coloured paper in, I mean.

Thank you for all your helpful replies

Hopefully I will answer everything -

I put exercise books and that is what I meant.

DS assessment was done by Hospital following referral (had private dyslexia asst - isn't dyslexic as such but has been diagnosed with a visual processing issue and visual tracking issue

He is at Secondary - the colour from tests done by Hospital are Blue (dark not acqua blue)

We have to go back late this year
The difference with when the overlay was used is very noticeable

Far better to buy a pair of glasses. We paid about £125 I think. But it means that she can use them for school, piano lessons, reading, museums, menus basically anywhere where she needs to read.

The dyslexia shop sell coloured exercise books here. Although I don't know whether their blue will be dark enough.
