Summer Schools for Year 7

Not sure how I missed this. My Dd is moving up to Year 7 but there has been no mention of summer schools as yet. Have any schools decided to partake in the scheme or could it be that schools haven’t released details?

My yr6 DD won’t be going even if she is offered a place.

Oh, and schools have plenty of other stuff to keep them busy at the moment like trying to sort out the exam grade fiasco - planning summer school activities is possibly a straw too far

Looneytune253 · 27/04/2021 20:54

I think it was just for the children that were particularly struggling and I think schools can offer it however they like. You've reminded me my daughter (y6) was offered an after school maths/English club. Maybe that's her schools way of offering the extra tuition

My DS’s soon to be secondary school is doing an 8 day one from the day after they break up from primary. They mentioned it in the offer letter we got in February and I got an email just today confirming the dates and basic activities (emphasis on fun and team challenges) with an offsite team building trip Covid permitting.

DS is looking forward to it. It’s unlikely we’ll bother going away this summer as everywhere will be packed (nightmare) if things start going back to normal so I’m happy he’ll have something to do for a few weeks. He’ll also meet his new schoolmates, some of the teachers and will be able to familiarise himself with the school before he starts.

Don’t why anyone wouldn’t send their DC unless they were going to be away. It’ll put them at a disadvantage to the DC who do go.

DroopyDaff · 27/04/2021 21:07

All Yr6’s have been invited at DS’s secondary school, not just those struggling.

Sarjest · 27/04/2021 21:12

DroopyDaff, I’d like to plan around it if the school is offering some kind of team building activities. I haven’t called the school yet as I know they’re busy with all sorts of other things. I was simply wondering if other schools are sending out information.

Looneytune, it appears to go beyond maths and English catch up now. The suggestion is it can be used for sports, team building etc.

I’d call them OP. They probably get hundreds of phone calls a day. I doubt yours will have much of an impact and the worst they can say is they haven’t decided yet. If you’re planning to go away, I think it’s reasonable to check in case it clashes.

Our area has offered summer schools for secondary school transition long before Covid. I remember older DC’s had one in 2013.

DustCentral · 27/04/2021 21:34

My school is not planning summer schools. We’re on our knees with assessed grades and the general aftermath of Covid. Y6 children will get an induction but it’ll most likely be in early July and for a day or two, structured to be like normal school.

Decorhate · 28/04/2021 06:59

They may still be in the planning stage - the funding was only confirmed a couple of weeks ago. My school is still waiting to hear back from staff to agree to man it before we know if we will have enough to run it. Most schools will plan it for the start or end of the holidays so if you want to make plans, the middle two weeks would be a safe bet.

That sounds really positive.

Our secondary is doing a similar thing. Two induction days in early July & a week of summer school just after schools break up. Emphasis will be on fun & getting to know one another. We did only hear about the summer school this week.

That’s done in schools I know first week back in September. What a waste of money and time to force kids and staff into school in their holidays.

Bootime · 01/05/2021 08:54

We just had an email from our secondary school yesterday asking if we’d be interested for either 1 or 2 weeks so they can establish what to offer. Think schools will sort this out over the next month or so, wouldn’t worry about not hearing yet.

ImpatientAnn · 01/05/2021 19:57

My school will be offering something but it will not be offered to all children - they will be selected but we have not firmed up criteria. Also waiting to see how many staff will volunteer. Currently all on our knees with tiredness so may not be many... I certainly won’t be volunteering as main perk of being a teacher is actually being able to spend holidays with my dc but I suspect some younger staff will.
