Prom

So, I'm trying to look to the future and assume that the situation will allow Prom and that DD will be well enough to attend.

I have today booked an appointment to get DD's dress shortened by ~8 inches (she's tiny).

Anyone else planning for prom?

Has school released any info yet? Proms take months to organise and if it's not booked already it probably won't be happening.

TeenMinusTests · 08/04/2021 17:13

It is in the school calendar and school have recently said it is expected to go ahead.
I realise we could be wasting money, but given that whatever we buy would have to be made to measure / altered, I'm not going to wait until the week before.

I'm a head of year 11 and have managed to book and organise prom in the last month after months of expecting not to be able to do giving it no head space! I've announced it to the students, but no official communication has gone out to parents yet because there was a hold up in the admin team. So, it's possible! I know a lot of my girls have been busy organising transport and dresses and stuff!!!

I think you'd have to be a real optimist.

Proms generally happen at end of June, IME.
Even if things go well and the plan happens, that is only a week after things are supposed to have opened up.....

I wouldn't be spending £££ on it.

GoWalkabout · 08/04/2021 17:25

Ours is booked for July and I am about to book alterations too!

TeenMinusTests · 08/04/2021 17:57

Ours is booked for July.
Even if it doesn't happen, I'm happy for DD and her friends to dress up and then have Dominoes / Chinese on trestle tables in the local park if that is what they want.
The cost of dress & shoes is a mere drop compared with what I've been spending on therapy & tutoring while she's been out of school.

Good for you & your DD. I know from your threads that you’ve both had a tough time so a bit of a party will be lovely!
Our school don’t organise a prom, it’s up to the parents to do. No one is saying anything so looks very unlikely. I can’t give it headspace at the moment but I think an impromptu get together with their friends could be organised nearer the time. I do hope so. It’s been a tough year.

TeenMinusTests · 09/04/2021 10:13

Even if DD just makes it to the outside mingling bit at the start it will be worth it.

DS’s school cancelled their prom the first week they were back to school in September so they are having nothing, no leavers day or no prom. These poor kids have lost so much and not even getting a decent end to school life.

DDs is at the end of June. Car is booked with a non refundable deposit but going halves with a friend so not too bad. We have a dress appointment booked for the end of the month and I think we will just proceed as if it’s going ahead. If not she can waft around the house in it.

TeenMinusTests · 19/04/2021 16:20

There must be other schools doing prom surely?

Ours is booked for 15th July - the deal was all money will be returned if it's cancelled by COVID.
Luckily we've bought 2nd hand dress so not the end of the world if it doesn't go ahead.
(Or at least I won't have spent £450 on a dress she might not wear)

Lowther · 19/04/2021 18:39

Received email today- hope to have a Prom for end of June as long as roadmap goes according to plan. It will take place a school. School have suggested not to go spending just yet but DD has become distracted from revising to looking for a dress. Haven't looked a shoes, car etc.
Glad she has something to look forward to.

Our school is planning a prom for Yr 11 and similar for Yr 13, but both will be held at the school. DD2 will go, but only if her GF wants to go too. Outfit will be interesting - we'll have to get her a suit of some kind, no dresses.

Seeline · 20/04/2021 09:00

Lots of the girls wore suits to my DDs all-girls school Prom last year (they had in January after mocks, so she was one of the few to actually get one last year).

Everything from traditional evening suits to tailored florals and loose floaty sets. Lots of the girls wore traditional dress too - lots of beautiful saris and Chinese silks.
