What is a typical day like in secondary?

DS won’t be in secondary for a few more years (so I’m hoping covid will no longer be an issue), but he has a statement of special needs (EHCP) and I need to start thinking about how he can be supported in secondary. However, I don’t really know what a typical day might be like and what he might be up against! Can anyone give me a general idea of what might be expected of a child in Y7? He has some mild learning disabilities and struggles with attention and organisation - is it going to be difficult to navigate the school and know where to go and what to do?

Here's a Day in the Life of one of the students with SEND in my Yr 7 Tutor group.

8:25am: Arrive at school and head to form room. I'm in there by then, and we have a chat. I make sure he has everything for the day. I keep a spare pencil case and notebook for him which he can have if he's forgotten anything.

8:30 - 8:45: Tutor time. Joins in with whatever we are doing.

Lesson 1 and 2: Has TA support if it's a core subject, and if possible other subjects. This might include writing dictated work, breaking down a task, taking him out for a break if he needs it. He has a timeout card, and is starting to use Zones of Regulation (and his teachers are beginning to get the idea too!)

Break time: Spends it on the playground on the edge of a group. If he's not in a lesson which any of this group he might wander around, or wait outside his third lesson

Lesson 3 and 4: As above

Lunchtime: Takes packed lunch to the SEND base and eats there. Will stay and play board games/cards/etc with staff support. Gets changed for PE at the end of lunch as it takes him so long.

Lesson 5 and 6: Let's imagine this is PE day. He's already changed at lunchtime, just has to put belongings away and put boots on. Does PE, either with everyone else, and TA support, or might do something else. He hates rugby, so a small group have been doing fitness instead. Gets changed back into uniform if kit is very wet/sweaty/muddy, otherwise goes home in PE Kit. He still needs a bit of help with this, and a male TA does this.

End of Day: TA brings him to return any borrowed equipment to me, and he heads home.

It's been a rocky year, but he's come a long way. He used to be in the SEND base at breaktime too, and need more time outs. His parents and Primary were really on the ball, so we had a lot of info before he arrived, and he'd met me, his Head of Year and SENDo online with his mum In July.

Thank you for that, Green. It has really helped me to understand the logistics of a typical day. I like the idea that there are several points of the day when he's checking in with someone, even though he is not with someone all of the time. I can kind of see why certain children might thrive more at secondary as they perhaps have a bit control over what they are doing, rather than following their 1:1 around!
