Can anyone in the know please advise? my dd is in y11 and having several mini assessments like in all schools. I know that in at least one of the private schools in my area the students are being allowed to use their Literature texts in the assessments, presumably so they don't need to learn quotes. My dd said they aren't allowed in her school though , so my question/worry is whether or not this is actually allowed and supported by the exam boards?

No idea. But they're not allowed them in the real exams. We won't be using them in our assessments. I'm not sure what's to be gained. Given that only one question (19th Century Fiction) doesn't give you any material on the paper and there's nothing to be gained from flicking through a novel looking for quotations in 45 minutes?
Most odd that people are being allowed to use their texts.

They might not need to learn quotes but you still have to be able to locate them in the book and copy it down which takes time.

Much better to start to know a quote per theme so A Christmas Carol she would learn just one about poverty, one about Charity, one about family etc. Some of them overlap themes making it easier so one serves two themes.

If it helps she can sing them, songs are much easier to recall. I am sure Mr Bruff does that.

We won't be allowing texts. They're an unhelpful crutch for most students.
