Kids who are poorly and been off repeatedly is it better for them to return now for GCSE grades( assessments etc) or to stay off?

Dd has been in hospital 4 times this year, not completely well but think School would be a good motivation. Will returning have an impact on grades either way?

I would hope that it could only help (we are in a similar/worse position).

Our school have provided information on how grades will be decided, so you could contact your school to see what their stance is to help you understand the position.

Depending on what has been wrong, could your DD do part time?

Wotsit111 · 07/03/2021 08:10

Teen what has your school said about grading? I’m still waiting for a meeting with school to find out.

NotDonna · 07/03/2021 08:29

OP it depends...

  1. on what your school are planning regarding grades. Are they doing mocks, mini assessments etc? Do they already have a decent amount of data?
  2. how much she has missed. Has she missed a lot more than the rest of her cohort? How does she feel about returning? Well enough?
  3. what are the alternatives? Would she repeat a year? Is she fully recovered or likely to relapse and be in a similar situation next year? I’d be very keen for her to be well enough. Then have a very honest discussion with school about how they’ll support her return, but also the data they have and what they think will be in her best interests. Be really up front with her so she’s very much part of the decision making.

If she returns there could be a lot of catching up to do & she may not get the best grades. Is there an option to retake (I’ve no idea if there’s a Autumn ‘resit’ option) any subjects where grades don’t match her potential? I’d be asking a lot of questions.

Wotsit I haven't watched the video myself, too stressed! The main thing DH told me was they can use info from y10 as well as y11, which is good as DD has done nothing for the school in y11 at all.

You need to know if they can cherry pick your daughter’s evidence.

NotDonna · 07/03/2021 09:25

By that, I mean use her best work from whenever that may have been/will be. They may not know yet as exam boards haven’t yet sent the details to school but I’d certainly be having a very honest discussion with them.
Do hope your daughters are recovering, OP, wotsit & teen. Such tough tough times.

Schools have to submit the grade of work that she is currently performing at, so yes definitely try and get her in.
