League tables

Which league table is the best to go by? I just have no idea.

Interested in independent and state/grammar - ideally side by side.

Thanks

If you’re talking about top 100 and % getting A* then they’re all fairly meaningless.
A better metric, for me, is progress but for Independents there isn’t the full picture as the GCSE number is not accurate or doesn’t exist.

gov.uk is good for state school info (look at the raw data as well as the headline figures).
Independent schools don't release so much info and, as PP says, you can't tell anything about progress in these schools from league tables.

The main thing you'll glean from most league tables is how able the intake is, not how good the school is.

Also remember that last years' results were excluded from league tables so most recent will be 2 years ago.

? ? ?

Wondering if one is allowed to upload from a newspaper

@TomorrowOnce: people have previously uploaded pictures of the Sunday Times league table to mumsnet!

See @typstrycks' post.

@Utility ok. Do not really need it, was just asking. Hopefully useful for many. Have a nice rest of your weekend.

I don't think you really can compare state schools and independents side by side on one league table (they shouldn't either). State school league tables are usually by GCSE results, which you can find plenty of info on online, but independents are trickier. Even exit universities don't paint a full picture of the independents as the course+university combo matters a lot. But comparing GCSE results of both side by side is probably a futile exercise in judging schools.

Having said that, the Sunday Times league table I've linked to before is a good starting point in getting a list of good schools/locations.

Good starting point if your DC is very bright and you want to move, board or are already in the area of a cluster of those schools.
Assume that’s the case OP?
Alternatively the Gov site for your area, looking at high A-level progress for state schools and above average for Independents.
