St John's or Epsom

DS (11) has been offered places at both schools. Finding it so hard to choose, especially as we never really got to see the schools. Can anyone help us? Pros and Cons? I know the differences - one has slightly longer day and Saturday school from Year 9 and the other offers flexi boarding. We live in Barnes. Thank you.

Hey. I just wanted to pop in and say we had a similar issue last year for my daughter. In the end we went for Epsom but they are both great schools!

Ive cut and paste below a response a year ago that someone put on re. Epsom as it's such a good and true review and it really helped me.

As follows....
One key difference that helped when we were choosing ...Epsom has v strong house system for all students including day pupils. Housemistress/master and matron for each house and that’s where pupils spend breaks, free periods etc. Tutors in house who are responsible for a small group of students - academic and helping them take advantage of all Epsom has to offer. Any problems of any kind go through house mistress who responds immediately and helps parent or student navigate all the other teachers . The senior members of staff across the school are all very approachable. I know the head and he knows my DD but he'd not be the person I'd speak to for any help or issues. I guess some people might but never needed to. Might chat to him pitch side at a match from time to time.

We liked that it was still a boarding school. It's probably about half and half day and boarding and it's not a school where one group or other are second fiddle. But means staff mostly live on site and are v committed to school life. Also, because of boarding a slightly more diverse student population (ethnic and nationality) which mattered to us.

Students all seem to know each other and teachers know them. The teachers are involved in all sorts of things - coaching, running societies, leadership positions, and as a result the students have lots of contact with them and the teachers know them well.

Students work hard and do well and they are encouraged to join in - sport, music, drama, plus all sorts of other activities - DofE, science clubs, debating, etc. Loads to get involved in. School day is 8.20 to 6pm and Sat morning plus sport sat afternoon. So everyone does sports and choice of activities during school day.

Academic results good. (Published on the website by subject if you want to see and compare.) A lot of v bright kids in the school and with a variety of other talents too. DD is not super academic but is doing better than she expected with their approach- lots of block tests and feedback works well for DD.

It's pretty full on so you have to think that will suit your child and family. DD does keep up one hobby outside of school but she has to be super organised and doesn't do a lot else. Had she gone to St Johns, there might have been more down time as think it's shorter school day and no Sat school (just matches I think)

An anecdote rather than data. Four exceptionally rude children in the playground (Richmond) today telling everyone they went to Epsom College whilst monopolising play equipment etc despite being all being over 11 in a kids playground. I appreciate parents weren’t there and school clearly not involved and so maybe it was just frustrated kids messing around.

Cremino · 27/02/2021 15:04

I happened to be at the same playground in Richmond yesterday evening and also noticed the same incredibly rude children. I wanted to clarify that the children your refer to were not at Epsom College. There were 2 children from Epsom College who were wearing the jackets. The 4 that you refer to were nothing to do with the 2 in the jackets. The Epsom jacket children fully informed us of the situation and were shocked by the behaviour of those children. Having been informed we closely monitored the situation. The behaviour was appalling I agree.

Nowfeeltheneedtopost · 27/02/2021 19:30

@Cremino Small world! The children all seemed to be together but I appreciate you have made clear that you have more direct knowledge of the situation. OP, I am sorry if this derailed the thread and, as I said, was clearly nothing directly to do with Epsom College. I suppose what struck me was how our opinions of schools can be influenced by the children we witness from those schools.

Cremino · 27/02/2021 20:45

It certainly is a small world! It's tricky to figure out who's with who when they are all bunched together and I agree that seeing children's behaviour influences people's opinions of schools hence why I thought it was important to put the record straight. Have a good evening

Thank you Cheese10. Very helpful reply. Does anyone know which of the two schools is considered more academic?

Not recent knowledge but Epsom was always considered the more academic whereas St John’s was more ‘rounded’. Jonny boys and girls were always nicer (imo 😉)

cheese10 · 01/03/2021 10:19

Honestly they are neck and neck on the tables. Epsom slightly higher due to stronger Alevel results but I wouldn't put too much emphasis on that... too close to call

Beckywithspecs · 12/05/2021 09:56

I have a niece who goes to Epsom and is doing very very well.

I am moving to the Barnes/mortlake area this month and have a DS starting reception in September, so am on the hunt for schools. Does anyone have any recommendations? My plan is to educate privately from 11+ so would like a school that will help him get to this level.

jeanne16 · 12/05/2021 11:02

May not be a factor for you but I found the exorbitant fees charged by Epsom hard to justify (compared to other Private schools).

Coronateachingagain · 12/05/2021 23:16

I would have thought St John's fees are not far behind. They both bank on the lack of choice in the area, especially for boys, and are still stuck in a race to invest in flash facilities.

Thisonesfortheroad · 11/01/2022 17:00

@79abbot if you don’t mind me asking, which did you decide in the end and why?

79abbot · 11/01/2022 17:26

It was a really difficult decision and a year on, I am still not sure it was the right one. In the end, we chose St John's. DC very happy and has made nice new friends. Reasons why we chose St J over Epsom included: No Saturday school apart from matches at St J.; Slightly shorter days; never really got a feel for Epsom (because of Covid regulations, we were not allowed inside the school);
To be honest, I think both schools are fantastic and you can't go wrong with either! I do like the idea of Epsom being more diverse and international.

Thisonesfortheroad · 11/01/2022 19:11

@79abbot I’m not sure I follow, if they’re both great schools with not much between them (bar the Saturday commitment) and your DC has made nice friends and is settling in well, why the uncertainty? Is it purely down to the lack of international students/ diversity?

79abbot · 11/01/2022 19:29

We are very happy to have chosen St John's over Epsom. The uncertainty stems from the fact that both schools are fantastic and it was difficult for us to choose.
