When will exam years break up?

If teachers have to submit grades by 18 June as published today, will schools finish then or at May half term ? Or end of academic year? I know I'm being impatient just want to know! Grin

I was wondering that yesterday for my year 11. From what I can tell it's usually mid May but given how much school they've missed it seems likely they'll keep them longer? No word from the school on it though.

slidingdrawers · 25/02/2021 08:22

I can't imagine why they'd keep them on longer, aside from doing something to mark the year 11s time with the School in some way. In usual times they'd be finished up completely by mid/end of June.

they could consolidate learning in the subjects they will be studying post GCSE, do taster sessions in the new subjects, catch up on clubs and sports. Events for closure

I imagine they will finish when the GCSE’s were meant to start.

But whose responsibility would that be, arguably not the School whose focus would be in catching up years 10-7. Colleges could put on sessions I suppose.

May depend on the school. Last year my DD finished GCSE work in early May and then started A-levels as was staying on at the school. Also given a project to do which was given in end of June

TeenMinusTests · 25/02/2021 09:09

Personally I hope the schools give pupils every chance to show what they can do, which might mean for some pupils in some subjects being able to show work close to the wire.

Especially for pupils just below the 3/4 border for English & Maths.

@SandSeaBeach

Question papers, which could be from previous exams, will be sent to schools before the Easter holidays and can be taken before 18 June, when schools have to submit grades to exam boards.

It’s a long time for the year 11’s to be out of education, considering the last two years they have had.
I’d like to see the colleges and sixth forms put something on to foster and encourage a continued ‘enthusiasm’ for learning.
Maybe also taster sessions for the courses they are thinking of taking.

TeenMinusTests · 25/02/2021 09:22

I'd love it if DD could get a headstart on settling to her college course.

@SandSeaBeach been reading the lengthy Government report on this this morning. "The Global Travel Taskforce will report on 12 April with recommendations aimed at facilitating a return to international travel as soon as possible... the Government will determine when international travel should resume, which will be no earlier than 17 May". Regardless of what we as a country decide, it will depend on restrictions on arriving country too. A French Mn'er on here was doubtful of a return to leisure travel there this Summer, given their current situation, but no one really knows.

Midlifephoenix · 25/02/2021 18:03

I asked our (private).school this very question as we are moving and was wondering if they'd be out mid June as of they had finished the exams then. I guess that's why the government gave that deadline. I did not get a proper answer ; I was told 'after exams had ended' which was not exactly helpful!
We are not staying at the same school, and I remember when my son did his gcses it was optional to keep going in and do pre A level work (yea right, like so many kids opted to do that).
So I'm assuming June 18 or near it.

They only found out TODAY when grades would be submitted.

As well as organising to switch back to full schools in and testing I'm not surprised they hadn't worked out an entire plan, especially as they won't have the full information until after easter.

MrsHamlet · 25/02/2021 18:13

We're still working out how we're getting them back - we're nowhere close to working out when they will leave!

doctorhamster · 25/02/2021 19:26

I work in a secondary school and the short answer is that we don't yet have an answer. I recon further info will be forthcoming next week.

cauliflowersqueeze · 12/03/2021 23:26

It will take about 4 full weeks to properly mark, moderate across the department, check across all faculties and raise queries etc before submitting. It’s an absolutely massive job. I’d say it would be hard to do assessments beyond mid-May and students will be leaving as soon as their last assessment is done. There will not be time for any “enriching curriculum activities” because we will have spent such a gargantuan amount of time focusing on awarding grades for exam years that the other year groups will need our attention and also exam years will have zero motivation for school once those assessments are over. There would be no curriculum to follow so it would be impossible to keep them going on anything worthwhile.
