Evening All, just wondering if your boys wore a tie and blazer for their zoom interviews?Thank you for any guidance

My DS has worn his school uniform for all but one school (they emphasised no need for uniform).

Longingfornormality · 08/02/2021 20:22

No, DS just wore a shirt with no tie or jacket - we thought it was best for him to look natural given that it was a Saturday and would be weird to wear school uniform (mind you, “natural” for him would have been a t-shirt so it still felt formal for us).

If you are from a state school - wear uniform
They are interviewing hundreds of boys - so a helpful reminder that you are from state .....
And therefore have had no interview coaching .

The schools we applied to specified that no uniform should be worn for online interviews and that the boys should wear comfortable casual clothes. So DS wore a hoodie Grin

It’s probably worth checking with the admissions team of the school you’re applying to.

We were told he should wear whatever he felt comfortable in, so he wore a (nice, clean!) sweatshirt. Same as if the interview had been in school.

My son did 2 in person interviews in his school uniform (Tonbridge + Epsom) and got offers to both. The other 4 were zoom calls where he was casual and got rejected from all 4.

I don't think it was the uniform, the system is broken where spontaneous , delightful kids were robbed of places in great schools by 10 min Zoom calls.

Thank you so much everyone.... your posts have been really helpful Smile

I think the key thing is to go with what the school says. If they ask for uniform or similar, then obviously go with that. But trust that if they say casual, they mean it - and turning up in a jacket and tie risks looking like trying too hard.

Schools we applied for specified no uniform and whatever DD felt comfortable in. so she wore whatever she was comfortable in - she was accepted into both schools.

stooshmum · 11/02/2021 10:23

Thank you everyone :) Our school has not specified at all, so I think we'll play it safe and he'll wear a collared shirt and plain school jumper

We did the same as you for DS: collared shirt and plain wool jumper, of the sort he would wear for tea out with grandparents, informal but smart.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/02/2021 18:09

Red polo shirt. He got a place so obviously ok!
