In what way, @MrsHamlet?

I don't buy the idea that kids didn't get the grades they deserved last year. If anything, most of the kids that dd knows in the year above got better than expected. But generally, I think teachers have a pretty good grasp on where kids are at. In exam years, there will always be a few who fluke a better grade than they deserve, and there will always be those who mess up and get lower grades than they should, but I reckon that teacher assessment will probably be pretty fair overall, as long as the teachers are given enough professional discretion to do it as they see fit. We just need to know exactly how they're going to do it and when!

MrsHamlet · 24/02/2021 15:54

A grade 9 in June 19 required 127 marks. November 19 was 131. November 20 was 123.
A grade 5 in June 19 required 86 marks. November 19 was 89. November 20 was 79.
The November series rarely has a big top end. It's kids on the 4/5 boundary in general.

cptartapp · 24/02/2021 16:24

I have a year 11 and 13 and am losing sleep over the whole fiasco.
Both my Dc would have preferred exams and have psychologically been gearing up towards them until the rug was pulled in December. Now they're on the back foot and I fear may come off worse depending how far back teachers look at past performance.
I do trust teachers, but DS1 achieved up to two grades better than predicted in over half of his GCSE's.
And it looks like poor DS2 whose done no GCSE mocks could end up sitting A levels in two years with the only other formal exams he's ever sat being SATS in year 6! And that year group bore the brunt of huge curriculum changes then remember?
If last years cohorts who missed 10% of teaching time were given results based on 'what they would have achieved on a good day', then this years cohorts who have missed 50% or more and suffered repeated self isolation and rota learning, should be assessed on 'what they would have achieved on an outstanding day!' The vast majority of pupils will not be performing at the level they would have otherwise under normal circumstances.
They have suffered extenuating circumstances en masse and should be compensated accordingly.

When is the press conference?

My ds did online mocks a couple weeks ago but he hasn't been told any grades except for one
I am hoping once they have been in a few weeks they may do a few more tests etc to help them improve grades as normally you will have time to improve your mock grade ( although my dsq did opposite and actually dropped grades from mock to real gcse)
I have just told ds keep trying his best and thats all we can do

ihearttc · 24/02/2021 17:07

@cptartapp

I completely agree. They have been through so much and should be rewarded for all their hard work, not punished for being in Y11 or Y13 in a pandemic.

Orangeblossom1977 · 24/02/2021 17:29

Asked about exams, Williamson says once again that the government will put trust in teachers but will not give more details ahead of tomorrow's statement.

Qn for Mrs Hamlet pls

Hi sorry this is off topic. Need advice on best resources to get into AQA Macbeth, Inspector Call and Power & Conflict pls.

Don has read the books. Should we use Seneca, Bruff or Salles Videos or GCSE Pod.

I’m looking at being in a position to be apply knowledge to exam qns

MrsHamlet · 24/02/2021 17:47

I like Seneca for revision. It's what I use with my students.

If you want books, the Oxford literature companions are waaaay better than CGP.

PenguinIce · 24/02/2021 18:06

Yr11 and Yr 13 dc here and the announcement tomorrow can not come soon enough. All work that yr11 dc has done in lockdown has had no feedback so not sure how well they are doing. I am preparing for the worse whilst hoping for the best!

HappySonHappyMum · 24/02/2021 18:12

GW is such a prick - when asked about how results would be determined he had a giggle and admonished the questioner for asking, 'just a few more hours - you'll have to wait until tomorrow'. Could have slammed my fist into his irritating face right then. And I am not a violent person Blush

AlexaShutUp · 24/02/2021 18:42

I decided not to watch the briefing in the end, as I knew I'd just be irritated by it - I figured it would be quicker to pick up on any important details this evening. Turns out there weren't any.Hmm

Can't stand GW, he is utterly useless. I genuinely have no idea what he has been doing for the last year.

portico · 24/02/2021 18:54

Thanks Mrs Hamlet
Eng Lit is now our only weak point - and boy what an impenetrable subject lol
Will give it a try, 😀

MrsHamlet · 24/02/2021 19:07

Gav is king of all the twats!
Once you grasp what the assessment objectives want, lit is arguably easier than Lang because there's pretty much only one mark scheme

Lockdown2021 · 24/02/2021 19:32

What is it about education ministers that make them so objectionable. Williamson, Gove, Morgan, i have had a visceral reaction to them all, but Williamson takes the crown for utter incompetence. Where was plan B they should have been working on since the catastrophe of last summer. Surely he should be sacked on this point alone?

ineedaholidaynow · 24/02/2021 19:39

Do we know what time he is talking in Parliament?

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2021 22:55

Leaked to the Times twitter.com/hendopolis/status/1364702555184517127?s=21

NotDonna · 24/02/2021 23:11

I think it was 5pm @ineedaholidaynow I didn’t see it but from what pp have said above it wasn’t much. I can’t listen to him. Just his voice makes my skin crawl. The announcement tomorrow won’t say much either - mini assessments optional, tags submitted by mid June (ie, in line with usual exam dates), kids remain in school until grades submitted, results published in August as per usual, appeals processed in Aug when schools on hols (so not).

ineedaholidaynow · 24/02/2021 23:12

Does it specify what time period the work they can assess is from, does it include anything they have done whilst at home?

NotDonna · 24/02/2021 23:13

Oh hadn’t seen your Twitter post noble now off to read that to see how close I got. I expect relatively as it’s been dripping all week.

Bee0808 · 24/02/2021 23:16

.

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2021 23:17

Edutwitter seems to think there will be massive grade inflation as a result - i.e. teachers will be allowed err on the generous side

NotDonna · 24/02/2021 23:18

Agh, I want to read the next page too.
On a side note DD2 will be chuffed if the other article on page 1 is correct. Reading here she comes!

NotDonna · 24/02/2021 23:20

That’s going to be tough noble as the kids who get those high grades and could have got them in exams won’t be believed. Even further down the line, employers etc will wonder if those 4’s were really 4’s. Ugh!
