I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of Moon Hall school in Reigate? Or if their child goes to the school at the moment? We're are deciding whether we should send our son there. He has an EHCP and is struggling in his main stream school.

Many thanks,

My son went to Moon Hall. He joined in Year 5 from a state primary (no EHCP, but on the SEN register for severe dyslexia). He did his GCSEs there in 2017, so my information will be out of date, as there is a new head since his day.

Good points: we didn't expect DS to get many GCSE passes at the point we joined the school. He did really well given his start point, including 6s in English. He is now in his second year at University - on a sports course but the focus is more academic than practical. That just wouldn't have been possible without Moon Hall's help. They also renewed DS's self esteem - he was really struggling at not being able to do what his mates could in his old school, and was lumped on the bottom table with others who were often disruptive. At Moon Hall everyone faced similar challenges, and that was incredibly valuable for DS's mental health - he felt normal and accepted.

Points to consider: (some of these may no longer be relevant as the leadership and staff will have changed). The very small year sizes - 11 in DS's case, 2 girls 9 boys - meant a smaller pool for friends, often travelling in from some distance, and difficulty forming sports teams (year groups usually had to combine). When DS was there there was no homework given, as the then Head took the view that the students have to work incredibly hard given their SEN that they shouldn't be overloaded - this was fine until the GCSE years, where we found DS's ability to work more independently (eg for revision) wasn't great. The Science teaching was weak (but I think those teachers have moved on now). The school didn't push those who had more academic potential - again, this may not be the case now.

Good luck with your school search.
