waiting list for in year place, what would you do?

We've recently moved and have applied for a year 7 place to our catchment school, which DD is very excited about. Her year is full but as we live close to the school, DD has ended up number 2 on the waiting list, which gives me hope she'll be able to get a place before too long.

I've got a bit of a conundrum what to do about another school in the meantime. The county we're in has stopped processing in year applications at the beginning of January, with the exception of key workers' children and those without access to remote learning from a previous school (we've moved from abroad and fit this category). I've seen some other counties have done the same thing. This makes me think that when schools reopen, there may be some movement as most of 2+ months' worth of in year school applications will be processed all at once. Intake for the school DD is on the waiting list for is 300.

What would you do in this situation? Let her start at a different school (remotely) knowing with some luck she may be able to change to the catchment school in a couple of weeks? Or homeschool for now and wait until schools reopen to see what happens, and then start at a different school if she has not yet got a place at the catchment school then?

I realise her place on the waiting list may change but as we live closer to the school than most in the catchment I hope she may stay near the top of it. Would love to hear your thoughts!

You have nothing to lose by accepting a place at another school as you stay on the waiting list for your preferred school. Could be weeks or a few months before a place comes up so I would at least get her enrolled in school even if she doesn't end up going in physically.

Accept a place at another school if you get one, and look at a transfer for their preferred when it comes to GCSE's.
