Is anyone getting online PE from their Dc's school?

And if so, how is it being delivered and is your dc engaging with it?

I'm not thrilled by my DD's schools approach but recognise it could be difficult to deliver and not happening anywhere.

Nothing, not even a 'ideas for exercising at home'

RedskyBynight · 26/01/2021 08:23

They are pointed at online exercise videos or given "challenge" sheets and can choose which they want to do out of a number of options. There's quite often a dance option as well as more traditional exercises.

Do you mean "live" by online? Think that would be pretty hard to deliver in terms of space and device availability.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/01/2021 08:41

We have a timetabled slot and the option to ask for videos. One teacher rearranged lessons so those who wanted to do Joe Wicks could (kids asked her to).

WhatHaveIFound · 26/01/2021 08:45

DS's school set online PE lesson and weekly challenges but at the moment he's not well so he hasn't done any of it. Plenty have as they encourage students to send photos/times which they share on social media (with permission).

Reinventinganna · 26/01/2021 08:47

Ds class has been put in a group of 3 and between them they have to run/walk 50 miles and show their times. He takes the dog out for an hour.

AViewFromTheWindows · 26/01/2021 08:49

Yes. Class activities. They needed to make this such as tennis bats, lacrosse sticks, hoops from things at home then pe instruction as normal. It's good fun for the kids.

Why wouldn't you be happy? Can you do daily walks/cycles for exercise? Or joe wicks or other online workouts. At seconsary they're old enoughbto find something they fancy themselves.

iVampire · 26/01/2021 09:01

Yes, they’re being given challenges, but they seem to be optional, in the sense that no-one checks each pupil is participating.

Some clearly are, as the school is publishing suitable pics of what pupils are up to. But DD isn’t really doing anything other than taking DDog for a daily walk - which counts as exercise but isn’t close to what the school is suggesting, and as no team sports possible, both her fitness and her motivation have evaporated. They’ll be back though!

0ntheg0again · 26/01/2021 09:04

Theory lessons or weekly challenges, some apps to download and do ball skills or skips or run/jog

Angel2702 · 26/01/2021 09:08

Yes and it’s causing problems for us. Full PE and dance lessons in full PE kit, clattering about in a room with other people working in live lessons is not well thought out at all.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 26/01/2021 09:11

Yes my house suddenly starts shaking and I find DS doing circuits in his bedroom with his PE teacher running a live session and doing the exercises too. Makes me laugh!

I always respect PE teachers like this. Who are willing to do it too. I always think it makes the teens more likely to try because they think "if x can do it ....." Grin
TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 26/01/2021 09:17

Wow I'm quite glad its one of the few not live for my child!!!!

Christmascaker · 26/01/2021 09:22

PE teacher here, we’re doing live lessons and pre recording but primary not secondary.

Oak academy have release secondary PE lessons this week, year 7 link...
classroom.thenational.academy/subjects-by-year/year-7/subjects/physical-education
Other year groups also available!

Enb76 · 26/01/2021 09:34

Our school (secondary) is directing the children to workouts on Netflex (sharelearnteach) sharelearnteach.com/wp-content/uploads/youzer/Netflex-Board-at-home-PE-board-1.pdf. I don't know what they are doing for GCSE years PE, I imagine that has to be more involved.

It's ok but I imagine it is not happening in all homes as there's a register but then no actual teacher involvement. I force my child to do daily activity - they are not always pleased.

Nopreservatives · 26/01/2021 09:38

We've been doing Joe Wicks with the children. They get a certificate for completing so many sessions. One particularly enthusiastic parent has also had a certificate Grin

MillieEpple · 26/01/2021 09:39

He gets a list of activities and the occasional live lesson but i confess I just send him out for a walk. The school offering is good but our house doesnt suit it.

Nopreservatives · 26/01/2021 09:39

A local secondary is using PE staff to supervise the children in school because all other teachers are delivering remote learning .

Bokky · 26/01/2021 09:40

DD has one live PE lesson per week and one with work set where she has to take a photo of herself completing it (secondary).

BedsorestoaSloth · 26/01/2021 09:41

Ours are deliberately sent offline and instructed to get outside - bike, run, walk whatever - unless isolating in which case circuits are offered as ideas but they can also do videos/dance etc of their choice. No full on policing but some accountability to teacher. In a full online timetable I'm grateful they're encouraged outside.

confusednortherner · 26/01/2021 09:50

Mix of live workouts, challenge ideas ie how far across world can they travel with combined total of kilometres between school staff and pupils, pre recorded workouts and now a optional after school workout once a week.

striation980 · 26/01/2021 11:06

Links to Joe Wicks, no demand for proof. It's a joke. If I could make my 15 y o do appropriate exercise myself, I would - but I can't.

bookmarket · 26/01/2021 11:10

Secondary school DSs are walking from lands end to John ogroats, virtually. They have to log how many miles they do each day. Obviously this is done with much exaggeration

Ooh, I like the sound of that.

I see it can be difficult to please everyone. My DD is secondary. Live sessions for Years 8 and below. She's beyond that age. She's got a full on timetable 9-4 most days so get motivation is low to do something herself. I'd be quite happy for her to be given time to do Joe Wicks. I think she'd be motivated by a collective effort or all doing something at the same time. She's not interested in clicking on videos to do her own thing in the limited time she has. She does go for walks with our dog. But I worry about how sedentary she is during the course of the school day.

'No one else is doing it mum'. I honestly don't get why the PE teacher can't get up in front of them, do some workout and get them to have a bit of fun.
