I'm feeling uninspired - I need an activity for reading club on Wednesday Halloween-based?

c.40 yr7s and yr9s, 45 mins including eating their packed lunches.

They should have read set book over half-term, but I'm going to give them a week's extension.

So far this term we've done quite a lot of getitng-to-know you fun games and activities, and lots of 'active' stuff: can be a bit wild at times, as there's still quite a lot of them. (Big space though in the library.) This half term we want to get more serious ...

But I'm feeling quite uninspired for this week for some reason. Any suggestions?

Lights off, blinds up and everyone takes it in turns to tell a short ghost story. You could give them an example while they're eating and then turn it over to them.

Thanks Zog, but we've no blinds in the library, and the group's too big for that I think. I like the idea though; we might try something similar later in the year.

Any more brainwaves anyone?

Make pumpkins out of black card putting orange tissue behind

Make bats?

Japenese laterns (not really seasonal but lovely)

What book should they have read?

roisin · 28/10/2007 21:31

The book is Skellig (David Almond).

I think some of the yr7s would enjoy a 'craft' activity, but not all of them. And the yr9 boys would definitely not be impressed.

I don't know that one - what's it about?

roisin · 28/10/2007 21:32

Sorry, meant to say thank you Katymac

It's about an angel: very hard to describe, but fabulous story, and not too long - ideal for wide-range of yr7 readers.

I love David Almond though, I've read a lot of his stuff.

One of our English teachers can't stand Skellig

Give them relevant books to do a presentation of what Hallowe'en really is?

How is it celebrated around the world (New Orleans? Mexica?)

Foods - I melt butter & marshmallows and dip apple quarters in

Bob & duck apple (H&S?)

Play Danse Marcarbe (sp) Saint sans (sp) and ask them to move to the music?

Could you do something with the Dr Who Episode 'Blink'

MrsWeasley · 28/10/2007 21:40

write a spooky poem or short story maybe?
Give them a starting line : "I was walking along my road when I heard a noise. I looked around ........." aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

make shadow puppets (with black cut out figures and torches?)

Decorate a biscuit or cake in a halloween theme?

Any good????

How did it go?

roisin · 31/10/2007 21:11

Oops - sorry forgot about this.

Thanks for asking Katymac - it went well. We actually were very low key and did a Halloween quiz; but I did some spooky story-telling with my literacy group in the morning which went well.

Glad it wasn't too stressful
