Year 7 maths support?

11yr old Yr7 DD really dislikes maths, has low confidence and struggles. I’m not much help as I find it frustrating. What can I do to help that’ll be confidence boosting, age/skill appropriate and ideally fun? Thanks!

Hmm. Does she know her times tables? If she can improve her times tables then that will make lots of different bits of maths easier for her.

If you want to improve her maths then there are paid-for websites out there like mathletics that people seem to have had success with, I can't vouch for how fun they are though!

If you want some short focused resources for daily practice of key skills then there are some excellent one here www.numeracyninjas.org/?page_id=165 (scroll down each sheet for answers) with the idea that she sees herself improving over the week (better scores/getting faster) that would boost confidence. She might need some support with them to work out where she is going wrong or get better methods.

Kids with low confidence like nothing better than a page of ticks, so starting easier and building up is the way to go.

Many thanks @noblegiraffe this is extremely helpful. She’s pretty quick with her times tables but looking at the ninja website she’s weak in a number of key areas (aren’t the nodes fascinating?) Her number bonds aren’t great and she struggles with mental maths in general. She doesn’t ‘see’ how to make sums easier either, I think because she can’t partition them in her mind. All her calcs have to be written down and even then doesn’t see connections. This is why I’ve found explaining things frustrating - she finds the longest way imaginable. The ninja website made fascinating and the links to supporting research. It really does emphasise how important the basics are. And staggered repetition. Huge thanks for this!

Would try Mathletics ..... fun and has various levels - so good for all abilities.....

Thanks @Joy93
She’s started the numeracy ninja worksheets as I found their research and discussion very compelling. She’s enjoying them so far. Plus it’s something away from a screen.

Hello, I have no advice but I was hoping someone could tell me the name of a year 7 maths textbook that would cover the whole curriculum. We might be moving back to the UK, my DS would be starting year 8, so I would like to skim a textbook to see if there's anything I need to help him with beforehand. The national curriculum is a bit too abstract for my brain, I need the actual questions in front of me, and a textbook (ideally with explanations in case it's something he's not done yet) is way easier than clicking backward and forwards on the various maths websites and trying to make sure I've covered everything. TIA!

@NotDonna

CPG books are good
I think that should say CGP!

For actual help teaching her a skill, Khan academy is quite good. A tutorial followed by some tasks. It's American but really good.

Also atom learning has free webinars

Also there may be some specific lessons on oak academy too.

NotDonna · 21/01/2021 08:21

Oh yes, definitely CGP books @threeitchyfeet. You’ll want the key stage 3 ones which cover both Yr7 and yr8. Schools will use different text books.
thanks for the correction soliel Ive just ordered
I’d forgotten about Khan Academy - thank you @CommanderBurnham
Oak gets a bit of a bad press from teachers re accuracy - although maybe it’s ok for maths.
I don’t wish to bombard her as it’s more about confidence building.

Thanks! Will look into CGP.
