Hello all, this thread continues from the previous "Upcoming Girl's Independent SW London Schools 11+ Exams" thread set up by @Oceane11Plus.

@PatoPato cleverly noticed, message slots were running low for the epic long thread as above, so all chat now continues here...

Oh, @PatoPato, this sounded along the lines of my DS's Hampton interview... Flowers Flowers Flowers

@MumRule20, DS did Emanuel's "not quite exam" today as well. We had a bit of a meltdown the night before re VR with shouting and crying (he wanted to refresh, as didn't have to do it for any others for a while), but today itself went well enough. He did appeal to me for one last maths and VR cheekily, but I stayed strong Smile and timed it to the second on the dot.

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 15:43

@Mumsrule20 we did get WHS, but when I opened the email my eyes just fell on a line that started 'it's a pity we couldn't invite......' and it took me a minute to realise she was through.

We've got SPGS, G&L, PHS, WHS, FHSS, IPS & RH in play though maybe not G&L after this morning which along with SPGS is really ambitious for us, though I'm not confident of any of them other than RH who are not interviewing. DD is good on paper but thinks a bit differently from the norm.

When we do start to get the rejections I'm going to shield her from them somewhat by being breezy . She's not especially engaged in the process having never visited any of them & we've always said the right school will choose her & she trusts in that. Not sure I do though!

Going back to the topic of 'worst year ever' I think the process has been easier on her but much much tougher on me than in normal circumstances. She would have been far more nervous had I had to drop her off at all these schools for exams and interviews. It's cosier at home but also completely removed from the actual reality of what's at stake. However, all this time at home with nothing else to focus on means I'm completely obsessing over every last detail/possibility. Plus all the bloody tech management - arrggghh.

I'm not great company right now and some of my friends have been remarkably patient with me - it's terribly boring for anyone who's not going through it.

Shrine · 15/01/2021 15:45

Our daughter who is at a London prep has not been invited back for any interviews as of yet. I wonder what we should do, is anyone else in the same boat?

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 15:46

Oooo @GrammarHopeful I meant to come & find you to tell you that one of the said patient friends I referred to above wanted you to know that her son also told Hampton he'd been tutored at his 10+ interview and he was offered a place.

MumsRule20 · 15/01/2021 15:50

@PatoPato So sorry I got the wrong end of the stick. Big congrats. Very pleased for you. You are on a roll it seems, it hasn't gone awry just yet and looking positive.

That is a good point about less stress on yours / other DD's having to physically shlep etc. It has been made a little bit easier in that respect. Sadly not for us as ours started in October - early Dec and they were all physical exams on site, aside from Emanuel "work at home" task today. All interviews we have had have also been Zoom.

@Stircrazyschoolmum Glad it went ok. Heard last few maths questions were a bit mind boggling...

@EITEL Feeling for you and DD - don't despair. It is all an experience gained whatever the result.

@dazedandconfused11plus Fab, thanks for the link on worst interview questions, will have a good read later.

Hope everyone has a relaxing weekend if at all possible.

Ooh, I’ve got my fingers crossed for all of you. So tough this year.

@PatoPato Left field and quirky is very SPGS, so fingers crossed your dd gets an interview as it sounds like she’d do well in that one.

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 15:59

@Shrine - have you actually had rejections so far or are you just still waiting for news. Are the ones you are waiting on aspirational or achievable in your mix?
Sounds like it's not over yet but there was a great thread last year posted by someone who was very worried about the outcome as the process progressed. I'll see if I can find it

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 16:14

@shrine - here is the thread posted at exactly this time two years ago

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3483270-4-rejections-from-senior-schools-options

It may not reflect your experience but it does have some quite good advice on it. Stay strong, have a plan. If you don't have one start a similar thread because you will not be alone and others may have some good ideas

Shrine · 15/01/2021 16:14

@patopato, Congratulations to your daughter on making it so far and thank you for your post. Our hopes now rest on pasta and marshmallows at the moment but it was a no from GL, WHS, LU and PHS which were in the realm of aspirational and do-able. She did all right on the ISEB but I guess not well enough to be asked back though we were told by one of these schools that in a ‘normal’ year, she might have received an interview. I was hoping that this being an odd and experimental year, that the schools would err on the side of getting to know more children. Anyway, just praying now, this is the first time we are going through this process. Thank you if you are able to find that link.

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 16:15

@dazedandconfused11plus - just seen your link at the top of the new page.....thank you soooooo much

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/01/2021 16:30

@MumsRule20 and @GrammarHopeful our Emanuel papers went okayish I guess, although I fear we might be disqualified for running a minute or so over on them. (And I mean literally, a minute) as it wasn’t obvious at the start to time from question 1 rather than clicking the link so I had to guesstimate the time of the maths, and then on the English DD had an absolute hissy fit about finishing her sentence whilst I danced around her shouting ‘hit the flippin submit button QUICKLY!’ Oh well, we’d prefer all girls so it’s not a biggie.. just so local.. but then perhaps a little journey gives them more independence?

@shrine sorry to hear about your no’s it’s such a weird year. And there was pasta as well as marshmallows?!? Sounds like a v bizarre interview!

I think WHS are doing their interviews over Thursday/Friday? So possibly if someone had a clash on the opposite dayit might be possible to swap?

AveEldon · 15/01/2021 16:33

@Shrine if you are at a prep then you need to talk to your head - they are best placed to advise you

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/01/2021 16:46

Ooh, just realised I’ve had timings through for both WHS and PHS.. both mornings, which will suit DD as she likes things over and done with and no marshmallows required!! 😁

Flossietea · 15/01/2021 16:53

@Stircrazyschoolmum when did you get your PHS interview time? I haven’t got one yet.

Oceane11Plus · 15/01/2021 17:07

Thanks @MumsRule20 for starting a new thread. So sorry to have disappeared and not given any news but I have been snowed under with work due to an unexpected project. With the logistics of having all the kids at home, all the meals to think about and prepare, the timing could not be worse. At least there is a silver lining, it has allowed me to detach myself from this 11+ saga and time is flying!

I didn't listen to DD's interview this am as she didn't want me to which suited me anyway. I also didn't listen to her JAGS interview. She was happy when she came out (same as after the JAGS' one) however I have NO idea if it went well. she could well have miss-judged her performance in both occasions and totally bombed her interviews, like what some of you have described. That's why I'm not particularly keen to listen to her interviews, it would stress me more than anything else and I can't face it. You are all much braver than me Grin She would also be less natural if she knew I was listening. As I probably wrote before, she is not super eloquent but at least I'm confident she is polite and reasonably chatty. She also did some prep with DH (including commenting on images as I knew it would come up from past experience).

I'm glad so many of you have had good news. Well done to all these clever DDs (and their mums!).
Very sorry for those with less positive news - we know a few very clever girls who did not get any interviews but would have most likely been offered a place in a normal year with a normal exam. I have the feeling ISEB schools will make offers to the same girls and some of them might struggle to fill in their spaces in the end so don't lose hope! It also shows some of these schools don't care about references and other circumstances and just care about the exam mark which is disappointing of them. At least JAGS had the writing task and interviewed everyone so they will be able to form a better view about each candidate and still make offers to borderline DDs in the ISEB if the rest (including references) is strong.

MumsRule20 · 15/01/2021 17:57

@Oceane11Plus so good to hear from you and see your post!! Had thought you must be snowed under! Hope it is all a bit manageable now and great you could disconnect from all this 11+ messy business.

I, too feel the same way about listening in on interviews, it would overplay incessantly in my mind after if I heard anything amiss. DD would also be mortified if she saw or knew and would totally throw her off.

Yes, exactly my sentiments too on the ISEB process and the schools who are only offering interview based on scoring - it seems somewhat wholly unfair and targeted only to top scorers and no reading between the lines, as some of them said they would do or what we hoped they for this year & taking into consideration reports and references.

It really helps to hear when others haven’t made the mark esp those who are amongst the bright and clever ones. Obvs not envious to be in that position because the expectations of getting the desired offers are much higher. Reassuring for others in the sense that it affirms some schools are simply have their own agenda and a specific admissions criteria which can be tricky to fathom.

Also, a consideration is so many schools change year on year don’t they, so one which may have been a back up a couple of years ago, could have had a new head since or changes which have made it a sought after choice. I guess that could mean even Prep Heads might miss that? Obviously, if in state such as my DD, we potentially out of the loop unless of course one has a DC in the private system already; does impeccable research and asks all the right questions, or can rely on a tutor with nose to the ground to inform, or employ an educational consultant to advise in advance. Otherwise, easy to make the ‘wrong’ or more inappropriate choices?

Not sure if I have just waffled on there. Brain is tired. Forgive me if it doesn’t make sense.

@Flossietea it landed at 15.23! Have you checked your junk mail? It’s first thing so perhaps you are later in the day and they decided to mess with some different minds after leaving me hanging till nearly 20.00 for the invite! 😁😁😁

PatoPato · 15/01/2021 18:45

Our PHS timing email arrived at 5pm and we are a middle of the day slot which is nice. All the rest are first sodding thing. DD takes a while to come round in the mornings
@Oceane11Plus - lovely to see you back!

WarmAndco3y · 15/01/2021 18:47

Glad to read about good news, with interviews and Emmanuel exam today.
Hopefully for those who felt DDs’ interviews didn’t go well, I imagine the interviewees will consider this to be an exceptional year, not everyone comes across okay on zoom etc
It’s not over until it’s over, lots of stories from the past where people have thought interviews didn’t go well and ended up being fine.
I feel in a bit of a limbo. Email came from JAGS this evening, they’ve postponed their sports scholarship assessment until January 2022. And will backdate any adjustments fees as necessary.
That could be the basis of acceptance for some people, and will now not be an option if done later.
I do understand why they’ve done it though.
So now we wait until 11th of February to know if DD has a place. I was hoping an invitation to the assessment will give me an early insight into the likelihood of her getting a place.
Wishing everyone all the best as we wait in this looong & drawn out process

Stircrazyschoolmum · 15/01/2021 18:49

@MumsRule20 I agree with a lot of your points, unfortunately, I think the high scorers will also tend to have very solid references and reports to back up their scores.. and because they find the academics easy (easier?) they take on sports/music/drama commitments and tend to do well in those too.. their aptitude and resilience can be very annoying to their peer group which is where DD has struggled with friendships as she can sometimes be overwhelming.

I’m wondering if the uncertainty this year has raised the bar higher as schools fret about take up and over offering. Therefore girls aren’t getting interviews that would usually. I wonder if there is some kind of reserves list if they don’t fill all their spaces, I’m pretty certain there will be more occasional spots arising in Y7 as there is so much guess work happening.

My turn to waffle.. time for wine and curry!

Thisonesfortheroad · 15/01/2021 19:16

Anyone know if there is an equivalent group chat like this for boys?

WarmAndco3y · 15/01/2021 19:21

There is usually a whitgift/ Trinity/Dulwich one and usually includes other fairly local schools

NoToMisogyny · 15/01/2021 19:26

Here you go @Thisonesfortheroad www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4093125-SW-London-boys-11-grammars-and-independents

Brot64 · 15/01/2021 19:46

@WarmAndco3y when did you receive the email from Jags? I haven't received anything and was really banking on the sports and music scholarships or either. Last email I got was a few days ago saying they would be in touch re: scholarships and academic scholarship assessment/interviews or something like that.

Brot64 · 15/01/2021 19:48

Erm sorry just re-read your post and it says this evening. No email here yet.
