SPGS Science comprehension papers

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well on these last days of 2020. My daughter will be taking the St Paul's test on January 4th (in a couple of weeks). The science comprehension example papers available on SPGS website are very interesting! I have not come across this type of paper before. Do you have recommendations for resources for similar science papers? If she can look at a few more examples, it would be useful.
Merry Christmas.

Isn’t the point of those papers that they’re very different to those set by anywhere else? They’re not so much about science as about the ability to make connections, think laterally, puzzle things out and come up with a plausible answer even if its not right, and that sort of thing.

We just got DD to do the two papers they have on the website as mocks a few days before the exam itself, no other prep, but I have to say we didn’t look for anything else so its possible there is something out there. Dd wasn’t at a a prep and didn’t have a tutor, but I would guess that some prep teachers and tutors create their own mocks in a similar style. I’m afraid I don’t know how you’d get hold of them if you’re not already in that system, though.

We did the two sets of papers on the website and as there is always some language aptitude questions (so we were told at the open day) we got her to practice on some Eton scholarships papers (the Kings’ scholarship ones I think). She was feeling very down after the exam despite feeling she had done well in maths and English as the comprehension paper was so long she had left a few pages out but she still got a place. I think it’s not meant to be necessarily finished but is a useful tool for the school to assess girls’ lateral and independent thinking, reasoning skills etc

I agree with HighRopes. The point of the test is to present them with information that is beyond the range of what they would have encountered either at school or at tutoring sessions to see what they make of something completely new. They are called comprehension papers for a reason. They aren't really science as such though they do rely heavily on logic and reasoning.

We also just did the two on the site. DD was not at a prep and did have a bit of tutoring (but only really aimed at exam technique/speed). She really enjoyed this particular test, and I strongly suspect that a child who didn't like it might not enjoy SPGS much either.

Good luck to your daughter. I hope she has fun at the exams. DD had a great experience and found it all very enjoyable.
