Hi, ds (yr10) has just had his predicted grades and they are 3-4s mostly. He has always struggled but im wondering if there is a great way to give him a boost in maths particularly without a private tutor? I've been looking for online programmes but not having much luck.
Thank you

Have you tried buying some revision guides andjust going through topic by topic, first learning then doing practise questions. Hopefully that way you can identify weaker areas and really work on those. It might be there are topics he simply doesn't understand or it might be he's finding it hard to apply his knowledge to questions. In the first case he should be able to approach his school teacher for clarifcation, In the second simply doing a lot of questions where there are worked solutions for when he gets stuck will help enourmously. If he's struggling with maths it can seem overwhelmingso I wouldn't aim to do huge chunks of learning. Maybe start with 20 minutes a day with small acheiveable goals.Good luck!

Does your school use Hegarty Maths? It's very good. There is a video and a quiz for every topic in maths. Mr Hegarty explains everything very clearly. I would highly recommended it

Hegarty maths online, or CGP revision and practice guide - but get the correct exam board from school first.

Creeplow000 · 13/12/2020 19:20

Thank you for your replies. His school uses hegarty maths as his homework but is this something I can set up at home to use separately? I will ask him for his login so I can scout it out a bit more.

For paper based stuff, buy the CGP GCSE Maths Foundation tier workbook for whichever board he is doing, plus the associated revision guide. Loads of questions he can work through.

With maths a little and often is good. Even 10 mins a day will pay dividends.

Thisyearcandoone · 13/12/2020 19:54

Just keep practicing papers from the exam board.
Not just maths questions, but how to sit a test like Making sure the answers are in the right place on the page. All working out shown.
Good luck!!!

Personally I'd save past papers for a bit, and concentrate on the core maths skills.
e.g.
times tables, fractions, percentages, factorising, negative numbers, unit conversions, basic algebra (useful for science), standard form (useful for science), mean/median/mode, angle facts.

Yes, he will have his own log in and he can do as much on there as he/you want. You can just search up topics and work on them. To be honest if year 10 and target grades of 3 I would just start at something easy and build up his confidence.

HegartyMaths is amazing.

KittyMcKitty · 14/12/2020 17:27

Corbett Maths 5 a day- all free (I prefer it to Hegarty). Also Maths Genie is good.

ReindeerAntlerLights · 15/12/2020 07:35

Hegartymaths should help him identify where is he lacking in knowledge and then he concentrates on that. As has been said, little and often, Ds1 did it daily for about 10-20 minutes in the week and more on the weekend from year 10.

I would leave past papers until he has a more secure knowledge base.

Bridecilla · 15/12/2020 07:39

Corbettmaths is my go-to

Sarjest · 17/12/2020 22:37

Another one here for Corbett maths. Free, printable, with answers and associated videos if you want to use them. 5 a day then build up to CGP to fill any obvious gaps. Little and often to build confidence and skills. Good luck!
