Hi,Will be moving from India in 2021 on account of husband transfer.DS has got an offer of place from Highgate... he will be joining in Sixth form 2021.Just wondering how easy or tough will it be for him to fit in?He loves Mathematics and some amount of sports. Was worried when I read on a post about kids being “rough” at Highgate .Is discipline an issue?I would hate for him to feel left out and bullied... since as it is Sixth form is a tough year to move ,that to from your comfort zone for any child. Please share your views Incase you have or know kids there.I was very impressed by their website and virtual open house events... so am wondering if am worrying too much. Thanks

It‘s a very expensive elite school in a nice area. I doubt very much any of the kids are “rough”. It’s a great school with beautiful grounds and an excellent reputation. It’s very difficult to get into, so well done to your son.

My daughter is sitting the 11+ entrance exam for Highgate on Monday.

Thank you ... best of luck for your daughter.Do you live in the Highgate area?Any recommended areas that we can look for houses which would be at a walkable distance or short drive for Highgate school.

@NewtoLondonMum , you made me laugh at the 'rough' description. Areas within walking or driving distance, are Crouch End, Muswell Hill, bits of East Finchley, and Hampstead. But the traffic from Hampstead to Highgate can be bad during the school run. Archway is also walking distance, but it probably won't be what you're looking for.

Thanks Soma... unfortunately doing this school admission process while living in a different country makes one take notice of every little thing that’s mentioned online 🤦‍♀️Thanks for the area suggestions.Any particular areas to avoid ?

@NewtoLondonMum , you're welcome. Most areas in west Haringey are okay, it really depends on budget and personal taste.

IMHO, in order of desirability:
Most desirable
Hampstead, Highgate, Crouch End, Muswell Hill (I prefer CE & MH)
Perfectly decent
East Finchley, Golders Green (both have tubes)
Somewhere between decent and least desirable
Archway and Holloway
Least desirable
Harringay Ladder, Bounds Green, Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Seven Sisters and Tottenham

I’d add Dartmouth Park and some parts of Kentish Town and Tufnell Park.

If you have a budget and an idea of what sort of property you’re after I’m sure MN will help with the property. I love spending other people’s money on gorgeous houses!

Hi OP - are you aware that there two schools - Highgate Wood which is a state school and Highgate which is private. It sounds like you are mixing up posts between the two. I imagine your son has got into Highgate if you don’t live in the area yet but for the record I don’t think there is anything wrong with Highgate Wood either and it’s not exactly rough by London standards - the kids are mostly from Crouch End

NewtoLondonMum · 05/12/2020 09:56

Oops didn’t know about Highgate wood School... thanks for clearing that up.
