Have you thought about DD / DS having to self isolate over xmas?

My son told me today that there is a group of his fellow students who will not be going into school for the w/c 21st December in case they are exposed to someone who tests positive for CV and as a result has to SI for two weeks, including over Xmas. I am tempted myself to do the same, although it would not look good, especially as they have all missed so much. But my kids need to see their Granny and more importantly, she needs to see them.
Thoughts?

"I suspect the parents taking the kids out early are doing so because they’re planning to travel earlier and spend more time with family than the rules are permitting, I don’t believe for a second it has anything to do with not wanting to self isolate over Christmas."

Not in our case. But believe what you like

TheyPavedParadise · 03/12/2020 14:46

I’m assuming the people doing it don’t have jobs to go to?

myhobbyisouting · 03/12/2020 14:50

Don't know if you meant that as rudely as it sounded @TheyPavedParadise but yes, I do indeed have a job Hmm

TheyPavedParadise · 03/12/2020 14:51

I meant it as a simple question, you can take it however you want. I can’t take my children out early as I have to work.

This is posted in secondary education so I'd be assuming the children were old enough to entertain themselves between the hours of 9 and 3

Ask for your dcs to do remote learning for the 10/14 days prior to christmas day. Many are asking to do this.

LadyCatStark · 03/12/2020 14:57

DS finishes on the 18th so the week you’re talking about is irrelevant for him, but if he has to self isolate the week before that, then so be it. We’ll have to do just that and have a lovely Christmas just the 3 of us. His education is more important.

My 15yo has been at school for three days in five weeks. :/ The rest in self isolation. I am trying to get Christmas absolutely READY so we are prepared for a self isolation Christmas if needed. I think it’s wise!

@Swimmum1206 I suspect our children might be at the same school!

Schools aren't allowed to permit voluntary self isolation except in exceptional circumstances, so this is surprising

W/c 21st December - there are not at school anyway are they?

steppemum · 04/12/2020 08:32

There have been very few cases at my kids school (2 cases in each school, both over a month ago)
The schools finish 7 full days before Christmas. (18th)
So I am not too worried.

But my parents have said quite firmly

  1. They have a duck and a spare Christmas pud in freezer and if we need to we will just stay at home and zoom
  2. They have been careful for 10 months, and will get vaccinated in january, it is not worth risking stuff over Christmas when they are just 3 weeks away from vaccination.

So we are not going over board to make Christmas with Granny happen.
Roll on January.

Some schools eg Stockport not scheduled to break up till 23rd.

My next door neighbour who works at ds's old school has said that she thinks lots of parents will withdraw their children and if it wasn;t for the fact she had to work she would withdraw her own daughter from school the final week.

Dd is breaking up early (the school is on the verge of being closed down anyway infection rates are so high) but it is technically private.

Ds is at a local college (most of our schools don't have 6th forms) and they are currently doing alternate weeks online and face to face. Luckily for him he is in next week so is totally online the following week (and breaks up on 18th.)
