A-Level Maths - mechanics help

angelinterceptor · 23/11/2020 11:02

My DD is doing this subject - for context she didn't do Further Maths or Physics at GCSE last year.

She is finding the Mechanics topics really difficult to grasp. Can anyone recommend a particular book or YouTube tutorial which they have used which she can use to teach herself some of the topics?

She really just gets an example from her school, and she likes to have the full explanation, so she can understand it. At the moment she is doing Forces, Equilibrium, Friction

thanks if anyone can help

There are loads of YouTube videos but none I can particularly recommend. Sorry

Khan academy are amazing for most topics

Mathematics of Mechanics is taught at Advanced Higher level in Scotland, so you might find some Scottish resources?

This school has on-line resources:

Hi. I'm afraid I don't know any websites etc but I just wanted to say that I studied Maths and Further Maths A-Levels (many years ago) and I found mechanics harder as well. I didn't study any Science A-Levels and I think that might by why I found mechanics harder to get than pure maths and statistics. I did lots of practise questions on mechanics (from my maths books I assume, as no maths websites then) and by end of year 13 I was just as good at mechanics as other maths topics (possibly better as I had practised it more than the other topics that I found easier!) So tell your DD to persevere and with practise at the questions she should get better. (She could try looking at Dr Frost website which has videos as well, but I'm not sure whether it's good for A-Level, I've only used it for primary and early years of secondary. I agree with the poster above that Khan academy is also good, although again I've only used it for early years secondary).

Thank you so much, I will tell her about the Khan Academy, and have a look at that Scotland school website -

I would recommend www.alevelphysicsonline.com/ocr-spec-a module 3. It is from a physics point of view but they are nice clear videos covering this topic which could help.

Try these, OP. I find his delivery a bit dry, but he is very thorough.

Also have a look at Bicen Maths.

He follows the EdExcel A-level textbook and the Dr Frost Powerpoints, if your dc is using them.

What about a tutor? I occasionally booked some tutoring for my DCs on myTutor when my DCs felt they had weaknesses in specific areas. Not cheap but I think it is the fastest and easiest way to get up to speed. Money well spent.

DrFrost maths is very good
