We’ve made it into year 12 and rapidly approaching the end of the first half term .

Lots of challenges we could never imagined as we started the year but we’re all keeping on keeping on and this thread is for anyone who would like to jump on board to share the rather unusual journey this is turning out to be.

Hello all, thought I'd pop back in at the end of the first half term (still got two days left but what the ehck) to see how everyone was doing.

DS has been enjoying the work so far but admitted yesterday to feeling anxious about how much he needs to do to keep on top of everything. I think he's doing amazingly well (whatever his report might say this week), he has had an amazing attitude compared to last year (pre mocks) and I genuinely think he got a kick up the backside from the GCSE debacle. W have had a sensible discussion on being kind to himself and allowing himself time to do things just for himself and being free to express his anxiety when it's getting too much. He seems to be maturing - fingers crossed! I think they have probably earned a good rest his half term.

MirandaWest · 20/10/2020 14:31

DS just got back from school (finished at lunchtime today). He said the 6th Form are dressing up for Halloween on Friday and everyone else is getting really into it whereas he really isn't that bothered Grin. He definitely doesn't want to buy anything but might do some makeup.

If he wants DD to help him he'll need to get up early as she'll be at school for about 8:30 and his first lesson's not until 10:15 Grin

RedskyAtnight · 20/10/2020 14:51

1st confirmed case in DC's school. A girl in Year 11. We almost made it to half term :)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/10/2020 14:54

We haven't had any students with it yet (that we know about anyway) but one teacher which meant 90% of the teachers for that department were off too. I guess they must all share an office!

sullden88 · 20/10/2020 15:29

Thanks for the welcome.

We have multiple cases at school but none so far in the sixth form.

Monkey2001 · 20/10/2020 17:05

DS's old school now have Y7, Y9 and Y13 off even though we are still tier 1, our local health authority seems to have gone for full year bubbles all over.

I think his new school are all in (unless they have COLDS!)

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2020 18:01

Yes, they are probably struggling in with their COLDS Grin

Reports today say 46% of secondary schools have pupils self isolating at the moment and attendance overall continue to drop. It's all rather concerning, isn't it?

Wheresthebeach · 20/10/2020 18:53

DD told today to self isolate for 14 day. So much for half term...gutted.

EwwSprouts · 20/10/2020 19:13

Sorry to hear so many falling to seasonal bugs or need to isolate. It's been a long haul since the beginning of Sept. DS has one day to go to half-term and is well but shattered. Think it will a quiet break with many lie-ins.

sansou · 20/10/2020 23:18

We’re on HT break and have escaped to the coast for a few days. DS has standardised assessments In Nov but I’ve decided that it would do him good to have a complete break from school work/revision this week. 2 wk HT here.

Monkey2001 · 20/10/2020 23:21

Eughh - sorry to hear that @Wheresthebeach. DS was dreading being told to self-isolate for half term, hope you can find her some fun things to do at home. My isolation boxes for DS1 and his GF have model making kits, puzzles, crochet kits, adult colouring as you can't spend 2 weeks looking at screens - I would love to isolate for 2 weeks with all that stuff and no responsibilities, but it is tough for teens who want to be out with their friends. Hope it flies by.

EerilyDeleted · 21/10/2020 06:28

That's a drag @Wheresthebeach, hope she stays well.

I wish we'd arranged to go away for a few days now, DS has been off since Friday but is mooching around and fretting that he's not doing enough work, DD (y10) doesn't break up till Friday but is completely shattered. We normally go and stay with grandparents but can't this year as they are in tier 2.

AnneOfCleavage · 21/10/2020 08:14

How annoying Wheresthebeach hope she stays well though.

Your isolation boxes sound fun Monkey what a good idea.

Enjoy your coastal break Sansou and everyone else who has broken up.

DD still got another two days and had an assessment exam yesterday where they had to score more than 70% or face a detention - thought detentions were a thing of the last in lower school. Luckily she got 76% but one girl got 37%. Another got in the 90s which is amazing at thus stage. She's got another two today (1 practical) and one tomorrow so she'll be ready for half term for sure. I'm sniffly and sneezy - put my symptoms into Zoe and they said I'm to do nothing at this time as symptoms aren't worrying for them.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 21/10/2020 10:06

Isolation boxes are a genius idea, @Monkey2001! I might have to nick that!

I heard yesterday that someone in my organisation has tested positive: I haven't see her since last Thurs, and didn't spend more than 5 mins with her then, but still a little disconcerting. Am away and in a very isolated cottage, but keeping myself away from people just in case (luckily we'd ordered food online etc, and just cancelled our usual end of holiday pub supper :-(

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 21/10/2020 10:08

@AnneOfCleavage: well done to your dd, btw, and @Wheresthebeach hope your dd continues well...that's a boring half term in store for her though :-(

Monkey2001 · 21/10/2020 12:40

@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore feel free to pinch the idea! Mine have been prepared as surprise parcels, but it could be fun to do it like those old Blue Peter time capsules, choose some stuff together and seal it up in a box as something to look forward to when isolation is announced, bit like a Christmas stocking! I also have snacks and painting by numbers in mine.

Wheresthebeach · 21/10/2020 13:05

Thanks all - yes it's an absolute pain. But there's an active whatsapp group going amongst the girls so they are amusing each other.

I think she had it last March so hoping that she's some immunity.

Comefromaway · 21/10/2020 15:13

Had an email today from ds's college to say they are extending half term by a week. he breaks up on Friday.

Meanwhile poor dd is isolating (it's her half term now) and will be missing out on our theatre trip on Saturday even though she has tested negative. She didn't get the notification until a week after her last contact with the positive case but the week just happens to be her half term.

AnneOfCleavage · 21/10/2020 17:59

Comefromaway does she still need to isolate if she's had a negative test?

One more day til half term - yay! DD got 67% on a test today but the teacher apparently didn't say anything so phew. Her practical dance exam was done in one take and she felt it went well so she's pretty happy. One more exam tomorrow she thinks although one girl thinks there won't be but DD isn't taking chances so will revise anyway.

Comefromaway · 21/10/2020 18:02

Unfortunately yes she does.

AnneOfCleavage · 21/10/2020 18:03

Just seen an email from head that we have our first case in our school. No idea on year group but email said that only 3 teachers will be isolating not any students so is it a student always in detention so never around the other students or a student who has 1-1 maybe as that sounds strange for 3 teachers to have been asked to isolate and no students.

Hopeful201 · 21/10/2020 18:15

We made it to half term, 2 weeks off-bliss. One case in 6th form, just direct bubble contacts asked to isolate. My DS appears to have stepped up a gear, the GCSE fiasco has given him the kick up the ar*e I wanted to give :-). Hope everyone makes it to the break without any isolation requests.

crazycrofter · 22/10/2020 08:46

2 days to go! Dd says the whole of year 13 is off now, having to self-isolate over half term. I have everything crossed that we’ll get to the end of tomorrow without being told to isolate!

Comefromaway · 22/10/2020 09:05

Don't count your chickens.

Dd broke up last Friday and the email to isolate came Monday afternoon. Meanwhile she'd been to a hospital appointment and taken her car in for service!

TheySeeHerRowling · 22/10/2020 09:25

Having to cancel our mini-break plans for next week - not for Covid-related reasons but family illness

Luckily I was leaving it till the last minute to book, so haven't lost out financially - spiritually and emotionally is another matter, in these days of having very little to look forward to and plan for

I guess we might manage a couple of day trips, if the virus doesn't strike Two days of school to go - come on!
