Y7 French and Spanish

Y7 DD is doing French and Spanish and finding the similarities confusing. She prefers Spanish.

Many schools offer both so i was wondering how other students found this?

DD is very capable although her weak spot is English spelling so I can understand her getting in a muddle.

I did French at Y7 and German in Y9 which was very different.

I can’t speak for other schools but in Year 7, DDs school do both French and Spanish. DD seems to have a talent for MFL I absolutely don’t have and enjoyed and did well in both. At the end of Year 7 they had to choose one to continue with, other than 3 girls including DD they all chose Spanish as it was seen as a bit easier. DD and the other 2 were moved to a new class who’ve all chosen French.

As DD seems to have a knack for MFLs I think it’s a shame she couldn’t continue both.

Two languages in year 7 here too. It's early days yet - as the year goes on the differences become more pronounced. I learnt both two and while they have similarities once you start getting a feel for them you confuse them less.

Has your DD done either of the languages before?

Our school does one language in year 7 (alternate French and Spanish).

DD did a bit of Spanish in primary school and prefers it.

DH found French really hard and got a D at an independent school so I'm wondering if she's influenced by him telling her that.

I got an A from a comp .

🙂 & I can top your DH’s D with a U from a Private!

At my DDs school, they chose a second language in y8. This could be Spanish, Italian, German or Japanese. It’s vital linguists are allowed to continue with two languages. It makes joint honours a sensible choice at university and no need for ab initio. Schools never say you do one science but quickly pigeon hole DC into one language. My DD1 is a linguist and I’m so glad she was given a chance to shine at what she was good at and continue to university. Schools don’t serve all children well.
