Politics A level

Dd wants to swap from English Language to politics A level. AQA spec.

Does anyone have a dc in Year 13 doing politics and can say how heavy the workload is?

Dd is doing history too, which is very time consuming, and geography.

Thank you

Not sure if this is helpful, but DS2 did AQA Politics AS along with History, English Lit and Biology. This was a while ago when almost everyone did AS's at the end of year 12. His school offered some subjects to AS level over 2 years as enrichment options. He found that Politics and History went well together - enhanced each other might have been his comment at the time. He did History at degree and master's level and found it gave some useful background, although he is more of a medievalist/early modernist.
I don't recall it being a massive workload, compared with the other subjects, but as I said he did it to AS.

Mine did it and history and as pp said they cross over a lot. The workload was less than history

Thanks. The history workload is massive so am not keen on her taking on something else similar, but I agree they'd work well together. Thank you!

There is also some cross over with geography. From DD's experience (current yr 13) the workload does not seem too heavy and she is really enjoying it.

Thanks! Well, she's done it, so hopefully it will go well!!

My dc is in year 13 doing Politics (Edexcel ).

He also does Geography (Edexcel) and I would say the content volume is similar plus to get the highest marks in Politics they need to do a lot of extra reading/ keeping up with current affairs.

I've taught both history and politics at A Level. Politics is much easier and really helps history - if the course is modern history.

I personally think it is less work and easier to get a good grade in politics than in history or Eng.

The workload is a bit smaller than for history. As a subject, it’s much easier.

Totally depends on the History syllabus and the Politics one. Both are essay subjects. If you don’t “get” politics, I don’t think it’s easier. Like many subjects, it has a framework of learning and certainly isn’t all debate about current issues. It can seem boring if DC think it’s about debate and the political dilemmas of the day.

DD is in Yr13 and is doing Politics, RS, Theology & Philosophy and English Lit. They are heavy topics in terms of being full on essay front, but there is a lot that can cross reference across the three... Her class is very small so they covered a lot of the syllabus by end of Yr12.
