Masks all day in school

Furious just about sums up how I feel at the moment. Just had an email from DS1’s school (he is going into Y11) saying they will be required to wear masks all day long in school from the minute they get inside the school gates to when they leave. They are allowed to take them off to eat lunch but will need to be put back on immediately. Before I fire off an email to the school, just wondered how I stand legally with refusing to give permission for him to wear one all day long? It’s completely against the DofE guidance which states corridors and transitions only.
We live rurally and are in a very very low Covid area for what’s its worth, no where near areas on local lockdown.

I completely agree OP. If my dc school try to enforce this, I will consider pulling her out. It is completely unnecessary.

Right so not ok to tell teachers to get on with it but totally ok to have a go at concerned parents. Right.

At the start of lockdown, I would have agreed with you that it is not OK.

Now if a parent gets snarky, rude, belligerent etc. I will post in the same way.

It is amazing how many parents take offence when you give back as good as you get.

As after 161 days of mulitple posts everyday bashing teachers, including various made up ones about what teachers are doing (which sometimes get deleted) it gets very hard to tell who the genuine parents are and who are just trying to cause trouble.

@TrustTheGeneGenie
It isn't obvious to me!
I've seen quite a lot of @noblegiraffe comments & threads and I've found most of them to be fine? Confused the comments/replies to them though Shock

Secondary school kids should be discussing these things themselves with teachers. We are meant to be teaching them critical thinking and communication

That's a joke if ever I heard one. If dss tried to speak to a teacher about why they had to wear blazers he'd just get a detention. They don't promote communication at all, the promote we say you do.

Not the experience my ds and friends found in school.

There's changed to no blazers from May half term until summer and before that at discretion of school. And they changed summer infirm to include knee length tailored shorts.

MS comprehensive secondary.

topofthewardrobe · 31/08/2020 14:29

Ah but some parents have allowed their kids to do f-all. I think at primary there was an estimate of 20-30 % were actually doing work. Secondary slightly higher but more like 50%.

Then those parents should be ashamed of the lack of support for their children. It's one thing if you genuinely can't support their education but most parents can try. A few years ago I came across a parent who was at a year six meeting about how to help your child with the SATs. She was upset because she wanted to help her child but explained she found reading and writing hard and maths difficult. If she can make an effort to help then most parents can and should.

Absolutely not but it's not hysterical to not want that to happen. Considering there have been rumours it will be mandatory it's hardly a surprise that some people will be worried about this.

Of course it's not hysterical not to want it. it is hysterical to think that there is any risk whatsoever that it happens.

There are rumours there is a monster in loch ness. Most sane people know that is bollocks. There is absolutely no suggestion that mandatory vaccinations is a consideration. The "rumours" have been started by the same anti vax crack pots who get their information from Jenny McCarthy rather than from actual science.

lakesidesummer · 31/08/2020 14:31

Just wanted to add that neither dc or teachers remove their masks to talk in the classroom, there is no need to.
They take them off for lunch and water only.

Knew it wouldn't be long before you gave us your 2 cents worth.

@LadyPenelope68

Like I said I have read it but no where does it say face coverings are compulsory? And yes it’s up to the HT to make that decision. My point is if it was compulsory for every school and the guidance said so then clearly it’s the correct thing to do but it doesn’t. It’s giving the responsibility to the HT. But it doesn’t say that. Even in areas in local lockdown they are only having to wear it now until they come out of lockdown, we are in one of the lowest infection areas in the UK so it makes no sense.

But I will go and read it again to see if it does say they have been made compulsary.

@ElizabethMainwaring

It's not going to be great for anyone. Blame the government not the school. The government had made no attempt to make schools covid safe. Social distancing is impossible. School staff are scared.
This.

How is the HT implementing this? I thought discretion only in corridors / communal. Mind you I’m not sure what happens if it’s outside guidance.

ihearttc · 31/08/2020 14:37

@WhoWants2Know

Maybe she is privy to extra information. Like I said I work in a school too and we were all sent the latest DofE guidance early Saturday morning which I have read several times. It still doesn’t say anywhere in there that masks should be worn all day. I’m not sure what extra information they would need to make that decision as clearly I’m a TA and not a HT.

OP posts:
ihearttc · 31/08/2020 14:38

@MarshaBradyo
It’s masks on at all times as soon as they enter school grounds. They are allowed to take it off to eat and drink that’s all.

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 31/08/2020 14:40

Op I meant I don’t get how a school can go against guidance, which is discretionary for certain areas atm. And I wonder what happens if they do.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 31/08/2020 14:40

If masks were compulsory my dc might not be off school already with some virus!

Well if you think name calling and slagging off concerned parents is fine...

Mistressiggi · 31/08/2020 14:44

@Ploughingthrough it would be great to hear a little more about your experience.
Do they change the mask at some point for a different one? Do they have a container for keeping it in while they eat lunch? How is it for the teacher using one to speak to the class?
I'd be really interested to know, I'd love it if more pupils wore masks but wonder about some practicalities.

Maybe its because they chose the wrong time and place to have the discussion.

Middle of a lesson, not so wise.
Middle of tutor, could be OK
breaktime, lunch time pupil committee or an appointment with Head/SLT fine.

I've seen worse comments on here from parents about teachers they've never met.
@noblegiraffe has not said it's any of her pupils parents, she's pointed out that there is some batshit parents around & as a parent, I do agree with her. If she was saying Little Jimmys mother Rowena is a total bitch, she's only sent this in to school today! I could understand a little as to why you have taken such a dislike.

Hangingbasketofdoom · 31/08/2020 14:48

I've reported that (not you quoting it Top, the original one!)

InDeoEstMeaFiducia · 31/08/2020 14:49

I'd pull mine out and homeschool. So what if other people wear them to work, they're not you or your child. They give me spots. So I avoid going out much to places that require them. Because I don't want spots.
