GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 10: Carry on Corona Cohort ‘The Next Step''

OrangeCinnamon1 · 20/08/2020 13:52

Welcome all to the 10th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) who were examined for GCSEs 2020 regardless of the institute they attended or the grades they needed. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.
If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.
Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children needed/deserved/wanted will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time it us 'results day ' most have GCSE results and some awaiting BTEC results .

We are all ALWAYS trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September popping this here.

That's wonderful Orion, many congratulations to your DD

EasilyDelighted · 20/08/2020 15:48

I bailed on the thread after the BTEC news yesterday seemed like the final straw in a very stressful week, but I'm pleased to say we were happy with the results today, including a miraculous 5 in English (were expecting 4 if he was lucky).

Congratulations to everyone today and sympathy to those who didn't get quite what they were hoping for Flowers

GreekOddess · 20/08/2020 15:49

Well done to everyone's children.

Ds got one @ grade 8, six @ grade 6 and 3 @ grade 5. One of the grade 5s was in one of his A level choices and below the entry requirements so we have to wait and see if he can secure his place on that subject.

Overall we are happy and this will be a wake up call for ds. Consistent hard work required for A levels. Ds didn't put 100% effort in for GCSEs.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 16:09

Welcome back Easily - great news about the English - so far so good and I hope you don't have much longer to wait for the BTECs

bigchris · 20/08/2020 16:13

HiSmile

Can I ask those parents with children going onto do maths a level what grade they Got?

Ds was lucky enough to go into school to collect his, happy with the results but like many exhausted by the stress of it all and worrying to think he's first formal exams will now be A levels !

bigchris · 20/08/2020 16:14

I do think this cohort will feel they have to work extra hard to have earned these results at A level

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/08/2020 16:15

@BackInTime same has happened to my DS. I've challenged the school on it but I doubt anything will change. Disappointing for them though.

ClarasZoo · 20/08/2020 16:23

So my DD got some good grades today and all round relief but two are a bit annoying. Firstly DT where her project was awarded a 9 but her mock was a 7. She got a 7. If she resits can she use her old project? I think not, but I can't find a link to the rules. Second one is statistics where she might resit as she got a 6 but her maths grade is 8 so that seems really odd!

My son got a 9 last year in maths and is doing maths and further maths. My DD got an 8 this year but her teacher told us frankly she would struggle to get a C in A level so she is not doing it. I would say if you want to get an Astar or A in maths A level you would need an 8 or 9.
KingscoteStaff · 20/08/2020 16:27

@bigchris at DD’s school they can take Maths with a 7, at DS’s they needed an 8. Both demanded a 9 for FM.

bigchris · 20/08/2020 16:30

Yes I think ds will struggle but he wants to try so we'll see what school says , he got a 7

Northumberlandlass · 20/08/2020 16:32

@confusedbutheyho I‘ve just seen your news on last thread! utterly delighted for you 😊

ealingwestmum · 20/08/2020 16:35

Just went back confused, what a huge relief; so pleased for her and you all.

He got a 6. He'd expected a 7 (but his school has marked hard) and would probably have got a 7+ in an exam. Otherwise I'd discourage him from taking maths A Level with "only* a 6.
ClarasZoo · 20/08/2020 16:38

I think a 7 is ok if they really love maths and are prepared to make sure they understand every bit of the syllabus as they go along. You can’t afford an attitude whereby you let a topic go because you don’t fully get it. But if you are prepared to make sure you fully understand each bit, and work at it, then that’s what’s needed. My DD just doesn’t love maths enough to work at the harder bits to fully grasp them...
stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 16:39

@bigchris our school asks for minimum B to do A level Maths (I think that would be a 6?) but they prefer an A / 7. Sorry in Wales so still on the letters.

To do further maths A level they have to have done additional maths at GCSE.

Piggywaspushed · 20/08/2020 16:40

Any resits don't include coursework, annoyingly.

GreekOddess · 20/08/2020 16:40

@bigchris ds got an 8.

Ds got a 7 last year in stats.

Got 8 this year in maths. He did 2 mocks Nov and feb and got 7 in first and 9 in second.

I think with mags big can be how questions are worded, if it's their areas of strengths and sometimes just accuracy. It easy to lose odd mark by missing writing the correct working etc.

No problem with re sit but I think I'd work out if it's needed for future or not.
