Online Tutoring

I'd like to give my son a bit of a head-start for year 10 with some extra learning. I'm not too keen on having tutors visiting my home at the moment - has anyone had good experiences with online tuition? I'm not very tech savvy :(

I am not advertising OP (!) but I am a tutor and I have been forced online this summer - it's been OK actually.

Some of my tutees now are a long way away from me so it's online perforce, but others are more local, but I am not keen on sitting that close to someone for that long atm so I doing it all online.

I can't give any evidence as we haven't got to exams yet, but I can see real improvements, especially with those who are prepared to do the HW and prepare for the lesson. The technology is there so the tutor can share their screen and show amendments as they go - it's not bad. I tutor MFL and the listening tasks are hard if the connection is not great, but other than that it's OK.

Thanks for the advice. I bit the bullet and my son had a trial Zoom lesson and found it much better than he expected. The screen sharing really helped him to feel that it was a "real" lesson. We went with alphastartutoring in the end and quite happy overall. Hopefully he'll stick with it.

My girls had their tutor move to online zoom, and it's gone really well. It was possibly helped by the fact that they'd already been tutored by him for a couple of years though!

My son is doing GCSE science tutoring online with exclusivetutors.co.uk. small groups with affordable rates (£10 per hour). He is going to start yr 11 so to avoid any other lockdown issues he can hopefully cover the course in a year without being at the mercy of school covid disruptions.Smile

Hi Ian, that sounds pretty good for groups. I plumped for 1-to-1 as I felt my son needs more intensive teaching. Does £25 sound ok for 1-to-1? The rates seem to vary a lot, so I can't tell what's "normal"...the tutor has a PhD which gave me a bit more confidence that I'm doing the right thing.
