If your kids are at private schools, what awards are they encouraged to achieve?

Things like Duke of Edinburgh or any STEM awards, writing anything like that really.

Depends on the child interests. DD's year group consisted of two members on the world champion cheerleading team, girl guide rangers working on their Baden Powell awards, people performing at various levels in music, dance and acting, county and national sports players. A huge range. D of E was really encouraged, but so many other things.
The just finished A-level group contained a four national sports champions swimming, figure skating, show jumping -and cyclocross.
Genuinely every child was encouraged to pursue their interest as far as possible.

I think most state schools encourage this kind of thing as well. DD went to a bog standard comprehensive (a good one) and they did D of E, World Challenge etc. They also had a championship golfer and ice skater.

It annoys me when school claim credit for their achievers when the school have done nothing other than provide a school place for that DC, and maybe allowed time off from normal lessons to compete/train.

My DSs went to a highly regarded comp in Hants. Their brochure still mentions a lad on the junior British ski team. Like skiing, a subject they could learn and possibly excel in- was an option for the other kids.

An ex pupil of DD's school plays football for England, and scored several goals at the last world cup.

Same as state schools. Lonecat all the things you mention happen at state schools too - I have taught an Olympic gold medalist, a couple of current people at the top of their sport, many playing at county and country level, an actress on a soap - but these are not because they were at that school, but because they have the natural talent and the finances to pursue it. .... we are another big standard state comp.
Kids do UK maths challenge, various reading and STEM competitions, writing comps (one of our pupils was second) and lots do the D of E.

Lonecatwithkitten · 19/08/2020 07:30

@Pieceofpurplesky state schools don't encourage this in every area - particularly - sports. In my area the four main senior schools will not allow authorised absence for national level sports.

Our local state schools are all about the academic they give no thought to the whole child.
But again it is all area and school dependent you have to consider all your options in your area.

My DS’s school are very big on Super-Curricular (rather than extra-curricular) awards - Maths and Physics Olympiads, engineering team competitions, National and international essay competitions, debating competitions, MUNGA.

OuterSpaceGirl · 19/08/2020 10:37

The super curricular stuff sounds very good. I wish ds school would offer more but we seem to have to seek these things out ourselves.
The school doesn’t publicise much so I don’t know if any of these options are available at the school.

@Lonecatwithkitten that sounds very unusual. I have never heard of a school that does not allow that (I have worked in four different councils)

Disneyvillain · 19/08/2020 16:23

LAMDA. Don’t know if non-private offer those as we lived abroad until DD started year 9 so have no experience of uk state schools.

YogiMatte · 19/08/2020 18:11

My DCs state school (comprehensive) ran D of E, also model United Nations and Mock Court.
Also do Uk maths challenge and a variety of other competitions.

TheySeeHerRowling · 19/08/2020 18:14

My dc state comp has an equestrian team, doncha know Grin

Plus MUN, engineering build-a-car thing, Olympiads galore, excellent music ensembles etc

The state comp they were at before had none of this stuff though
