GCSE Summer 2020 Thread 9 : Carry on Corona Cohort ‘Let’s Ofqual the whole thing off'

OrangeCinnamon1 · 18/08/2020 12:56

Welcome all to the 9th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort - the Corona Cohort!

This is a thread for supporting all young people ( and their parents) taking GCSEs regardless of the institute they attend or the grades they need. It is respectfully requested that we are all supportive and helpful to each other.

If you want to start a debate e.g state vs private - please do not within this thread.

Similarly it should be recognised that the grades our children need/deserve/want will vary across the board- we wish to celebrate and comiserate with all. One same grade outcome can simultaneously cause joy and despair for different posters and their families. Please be sensitive when responding to threads about grade outcomes.

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay on the Secondary Education Board (at least until Mumsnet HQ chuck us out Grin ) as from now on our DS/DD may go down various paths such employment, apprenticeships, higher ed etc so we decided not to be exclusionary.

Any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find. There is no preciousness about who starts new threads!

At this precise moment in time we are still awaiting GCSE results . At first these were to be that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review. Now it has been decided that the higher of Centre Assessed Grades and Calculated Grades will be awarded in two parts??!?!

We are all STILL trying to protect our young people's mental health, which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

We had no idea what to expect but at the end of year 10 she was working 1-2 levels above all actual results. Year 11 the last thing she did was mocks and she bombed them. Absolute disaster zone. So I guess these results have landed in the middle.

Witchend · 20/08/2020 10:58

@singingstones
She thinks she's being funny. I have now got out of her that she got a 9 for maths, which was my main worry as she wants to do further and the teacher constantly underestimated her.

Paranoidmarvin · 20/08/2020 10:58

All 4’s 5’s and one 6. He has been off school so much in the last year due to issues with legs so we’re expecting 2 and 3. He gets to do what he wants and no resits. So we are all happy here

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 11:00

There's a good argument then to say that resits are worthwhile and could completely change her results profile if she was working at a higher level before the mocks. Loads of people mess up mocks and do well in the real thing, it's partly what mocks are for. Fingers crossed they will let her try

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/08/2020 11:01

Does anyone else feel utterly exhausted now?
I think the last few weeks has finally caught up with me, and the adrenaline is draining away - feel like I could go back to bed! (That might be the Buck’s Fizz we had at breakfast...)

I’m also feeling a bit deflated, weirdly. DD’s friends all got 8s and 9s, which isn’t a surprise (some of the top girls in a good school), so DD’s solo 6 is niggling me.
Ridiculous, especially as it’s what we all predicted. I need to have a word with myself! Blush

Devlesko · 20/08/2020 11:05

singingstones

I have just gone back to see your dc results.
Wow, so many and well done.

There are some brilliant results, well done to all.
Sincerest commiserations to those not receiving good news. Thanks

Well, whose starting the A level thread? Grin

goldface · 20/08/2020 11:07

All good this end! More than enough to do the alevels he wants at the college of his choice so huge relief here x

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 11:08

Same here Also, big adrenaline crash and nobody knows what to do with themselves. Your DD did amazingly well!

ScribblyGum · 20/08/2020 11:10

Much joy and relief here. Seven 9s, an 8 and a 7. I was awake half the night worrying she wasn’t going to get her much longed for 9 in art and she comes out of school with a little smile with seven of them!
I’d love to go back to bed but have promised to drive her into town so she can sit in the park with her friends.
I might go and find a bar and order a glass of champagne like I’m in Sex and the City or something.

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 11:10

Great news Witchend and Paranoid

Witchend · 20/08/2020 11:13

Apparently she's not telling me because she wants to go shopping and she's going to tell me one result for each item she wants. Manipulative child.
She's just told me the first item she wants is on line-a T-shirt for $35. I may have just disowned her and cut up my credit card. Grin

QuacksInTheDark · 20/08/2020 11:15

My DS passed everything he needed to do his chosen A-Levels I'm so happy for him 🥳🥳🥳🥳 well done everyone!!!

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 11:17

@Witchend
Love it! She is going to go far in life!

Sarahbeans · 20/08/2020 11:18

That's fantastic @Witchend. Great way to play it!

RedskyAtnight · 20/08/2020 11:20

I think my DS may have got a GAV :)

His school have marked hard, and it's clear they have insisted on evidence rather than potential (e.g. DS has some work and one mock paper marked as a 7 in physics, but still got a CAG of 6).

However, despite his assessments averaging a 2/3 in Economics, he's somehow ended up with a 5. He's not actually pleased about it because he thinks he doesn't deserve it (he'd have rather had the 7 in physics). Guess he's won some and lost some.

mummabear74 · 20/08/2020 11:20

DD very happy with 1x6, 8x7 & 2x8. Staying on at sixth form but possibly looking to change an A level choice.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 20/08/2020 11:21

Thanks, singingstones! As did your DS!
I’m all over the place now. Have already called my mum, messaged the godparents, and had a little FaceTime chat with DD’s friends, but now I’m twiddling my thumbs.
I think it’s worse because we haven’t been into school, so have missed out on that particular buzz.
A friend who teaches at DD’s school (but has never taught her) texted to say she’d seen DD’s results and how fantastic they were, which was nice, but it’s such a shame DD won’t get to see her HoY or her maths and science teachers, who had been her cheerleaders since year 10.

beenrumbled · 20/08/2020 11:22

So relieved - 9, three 8's, 2 7's and a 6 in History - they have predicted a Merit2 for her Btec, and she had a 7 in English lit from last year.

She was happy overall but thinks might have got an 8 in her Biology exam, and was really doing better in History so thinks would have done better on the day, but is really please with her results in Maths and English Language.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 20/08/2020 11:24

Well done to all: sounds like some great results (& a future Queen of Negotiation in @Witchend's dd!).

3 x 7; 1 x 8 and the remainder 9s for ds: a couple a grade higher than he got at mocks, but otherwise as expected, so it feels like great but fair results: he is absolutely delighted. Sighs of relief all round!

Paranoidmarvin · 20/08/2020 11:26

@Witchendmy son thinks ur daughter is a genius 😂😂

pasanda · 20/08/2020 11:28

1x7 (Lang)
1x6 (art)
1x5 (lit)
1x 4 (PA)
3x 3 (maths ☹️ & com science)
1x2 (geog)

Business studies yet to come but know it's a pass.

So pretty consistent....not!!!
I feel a mixture of relief and flatness. So many getting so much better. But she is who she is and so long as she can do what she wants next year, it'll be ok 🤞

SingingSands · 20/08/2020 11:30

Happy DD in this house with a 7, two 9s and the rest 8s.

School have just phoned to congratulate her and asked if they can have a photo for their social media so she's upstairs now straightening her hair!

Darbs76 · 20/08/2020 11:30

Well done everyone, well done mums and dads too for the support we give our children. Couldn’t be prouder than I was today. Tears were shed, DS’s dad ended up sobbing in the car saying he wishes his dad was here to see it. Then I said the same, then all crying!! Happy tears. Nando’s tonight and I have the Apple Watch to give him from me. So relieved he got the grades he deserved

stoneysongs · 20/08/2020 11:32

Hopefully she will take pity on you @Witchend when she becomes a multi millionaire having bankrupted you on the way Grin

Oh yes Also she's moving on isn't she - it's such a shame that they are not getting any proper send off and goodbyes. Must be hard for the teachers too. Maybe something will be arranged for nearer to Christmas time but they'll all have started their next chapters by then.

I finally have something to do - DS has put in a lunch request of sausage rolls from Asda Confused
A glimpse into his future student lifestyle there I reckon. DH whispered 'get something nicer for us though right?'

SultanasofPing · 20/08/2020 11:34

6 x 9: 2 x 8 and a 7
Amazing - she's over the moon and I'm hugely relieved!
Congrats to everyone and fingers crossed for anyone still waiting on BTECs xxx
